Im surprised the driver wasn't killed, thats a nasty one, targa's, not having a roof structure linking the front to the back up top, much like a taco shell, can do uglies in an accident

This must be why insurance companies beat us down with ridiculous premiums for targas and cabs

They hit a Honda Accord. The 3 occupants are all in critical condition at this point.

When you see a picture like this, it reminds us all of how vulnerable we are in older Porsche models. In particular, the 356s and early 911s lacked many of the safety features we have in our newer models.

Things like seat belts, head restraints, crumple zones, side door beams, side air bags, curtain air bags, etc. have, in part, driven up the cost and weight of newer models, but at the same time improve the survivability of severe accidents.

The lesson here, if any, is that making a decision about which Porsche to buy should include safety as well as price, water-cooled vs. air-cooled, performance, power, etc.

Accidents are a fact of life but we can reduce the risk by driving responsibly. I used to be crazy back when I was in my late teens and early 20's. I nearly got killed in an RX7. I was cut off by a drunk driver. It was his fault and in order to avoid him, I smashed a concrete light standard and broke my neck (not severely). If I was driving responsibly, the accident could undoubtedly have been avoided. I was driving quite fast and recklessly so when the drunk cut me off, I couldn't react quickly enough to avoid the accident. Even if you cannot control the way others drive, you can drastically reduce your risk by being careful. Please keep the shiny side up and have a great life with your toys.

Yep, sad fact of life is, non of us knows when one little bit of inattention or reducing the margin of safety in our actions will be the one that bites us. Its especially upsetting when innocent folks get tangled up in somebody elses' action.

In the Air Force one of my flight instructors always used to say "We'd probably be alright and make it, but probably and airplanes don't mix." I've said that many times to myself regarding cars, motorcycles, boats, ladders, household electricity, and etc. Its a saying that's always served me well.
