I do. or Did. My 968 cab cost 1200 a year, 996 about 800. I just bought a classic car policy and reduced it substantitally, but less than 3k miles a year on the 968.

The driver and passenger both died in this wreck. Apparently they hit a car that failed to yied the right of way. The other car turned left directly in front of them .

a sombre reminder to all of us ... the reasons cars are bigger and heavier than our light weight machines is largely due to safety features. Not saying it would have made a difference to these poor folks, but maybe.. just maybe it would have ....

Actually, that is a point I investigated. I drive around in my '73, as well as my '63 Alpine and formerly '63 356. My wife was giving me a hard time about the lack of modern safety equipment. So, I called the AAA, my insurer then, and asked if they had any studies about the benefit of all the safety equipment, or if they were more hype than benefit. Unbelievably, they put me in direct contact with their head safety guy, who formerly worked with the NHTSA and had all the studies. He told me exactly what I had heard. Many of these things help in only limited and narrow circumstances, including submarining engines, crumple zones, antilock brakes, side impact bars. He further affirmatively stated that only two, yes two, of the safety items really made any substantial difference: three point seatbelts and SIDE impact air bags.
Take this for what it's worth. Make your own decisions. But, don't necessarily give full credit to the claims of the manufacturers pushing on our fears to sell new cars.

I'm sorry to see this, but that is a lot of damage... where they traveling at a high rate of speed and the Honda mis judged because of the speed factor?

now there is a surprise. I would have thought the front impact bag would have been more beneficial. That sure looks like a lot of damage to that car but it can be deceiving. I actualy watched a real life extraction once from a vehicle. One of the firefighters told me the objective is to take the car apart around the occupant so the occupant can be removed with little movement. The accident didn't look that bad but when the firefightes were through it looked like a peeled open Bananna.

Well, I'm only going on uneducated conjecture here, but think about it, from the front there is at least 5 feet between the driver and the object it hits with admittedly lots of metal to absorb impact. But, on the side, there is a plate of glass between your head and whatever slams into the side of the car. Yeah, on a forward impact your going to hit the steering and that can do lots of damage. But, it from the side, it's the other car that's hitting you.

This is precisely why I bought a new 911 recently. The new ones come with 6 air bags now! While I loved the older cars there is just no reasonable chance again a massive SUV when it comes down to a highway challenge.
