removing axle nut question
Can the axle nut(32mm?) be loosened while the wheel is off the ground with the tranny in reverse, or is this to much strain on the tranny itself. It's just that the car is nicely set on it's jack stands and I hate to take it off. I noticed the ripped outer CV boot while doing other work. TIA..

You don't need to remove this nut to do the CV joints, anyway. Just undo the allen style bolts that hold the CV joints to the flanges on the transmission and the wheel hub. This you can do in the air. (Must do it this way.) Be sure to get the bolt heads good and clean before you go wrenching at them, and have a good hex wrench. Stripping the inside hex will lead to much drilling and cursing.

Make some markings of the CV shaft to indicate outer/inner side. I usually spray a white spot on the inner CV joint for reference. Also apply new CV grease after cleaning. New gasket might be needed too.

Andrew is dealing with a 964 series 911...the only way to release the outer part of the half shaft is via the 32mm nut in question.
Up till '89, half shafts were held to the wheel carrier in the same fashion as they are to the transmission stub axles.
Andrew, obtain a 32mm impact socket, and a decent impact wrench...that's about the only way you're going to get that nut off - I know this from VERY recent personal experience.
John, to answer your question, the two posts prior to yours is EXACTLY how to remove the ones off your '87.

Jeff, bought the socket, and using a 1/2" breaker bar and a fence post my sister had in her garage, it came off, NO problem. My shop wanted in the neighberhood of $300 bucks just for the labor to remove the axle. I did it, taking my time in about an hour, first time too!! LOL Cheap entertainment..all for 10 bucks(cost of socket) BTW, went with BMA autoparts instead of Vertex, way better deal.

Andrew, where did you find your socket? ...was it an impact socket or just a Sears 1/2" drive socket?
...if so, I have one of those - trying to find a decent set of BIG metric impact sockets.

Jeff, I just went to a local independent auto-parts dealer and he had it. I'll check the make on it later today. To tell you the truth I don't know if it's a impact socker or not.
