Does anyone know of this? Given all the concern with alternators on our cars, and that clock that never works, it would be nice to have a direct replacement voltmeter guage for the clock hole...

I don't have one but I have definitely seen it. All you really need is a VM that fits the hole. with black trim.
I considered it but wanted to keep the original look , I mounted my DVM low , under the ashtray.

Yeah, do a search on ebay. I was actually looking into this last night, as I also would like a VM in the car. I found a business on ebay that is selling a module that has the VM, and also a couple of indicating lamps, or lamp and switch combo. It fits in the area below the air conditioning controls in the console. The finish looks pretty good, although I would probably use a black leather instead of the wrinkle finish he uses. If you cannot find it. let me know and I will try to post the link. I think I am actually going to make my own. Should be pretty simple.

They make a bunch of low priced led readout volt meters that plug into your cigarette lighter.....no mods to your car......http://www.cetsolar.com/voltmeter.htm
This is just one of many...do a search.
My radar detector has this built in with audible alerts for both too high or too low voltage, a nice little feature.

Here is a link to t he one I was speaking of. I have no affiliation at all, and as I said,it would be easy to make your own in this fashion.

you could just do the JC whitney ones. they are small and cheap. you could probably fake something up if not small enough. Lots of "ricer" companies have these things, like Megan racing, Blitz, Greddy, etc...
I like Apex'i ones but they are kind of pricey, because it is a read out thing. But also I think you can have many companies making the "same" product. I think if you are looking for the stock look, go check out your local auto parts store...like Advance Auto Parts, and I think you'll find them in the performance section. If not then check the "ricer" department. It will be around. One that I found that looked decent was http://www.haneline.com/
I like the multi-one gauges. But then again most of my gauges are dead anyways.

That panel on ebay looks pretty cheesy, but the idea is a good one. I just wish VDO would produce the proper sized VM for the clock hole. I'm sure they'd sell a zillion or 'em....
I think I'll make my own panel without the "pickup truck lightbar" toggle switch/light.

So lets get going ... we have lots of smart guys here ...
I do not have AC so I would have to have my panel right at the top.
I would have to figure out how to fasten it.
I would need an elecrical source , preferabley without drilling holes in my console.
I have cork interior but a black panel should look okay.
the plan begins .... any other suggestions comments ?

Where would you wire it in? You need one tap for the light, then another for the metering....
And while we're at it, what about other gauges? When I had my 914, I always coveted the optional center console:

You can never have too many gauges....
