Default What year is my car?

I am a new Porsche owner and was hoping for some clarification. I sometimes get hung up on small details... Like this one. My car is an 88' Targa so says my registration and title as does my carfax report. However it was manufactured in 06/87 and the color is Cassirot, a one year only color (1987) according to Porsche. and it has a 24 pin DME chip (1987). I know it is typical for a manufacturer to start the next year model early. I am just wondering why or what makes it an 88' on paper vs. an 87' according to the actual car, e.g., paint color, date, DME, etc.

I just like knowing as much as I can about my cars.

Thanks in advance,
Earl

The tenth figure of the VIN will tell you the actual year.

Example: W P O X X X X X X J X X X X X X X

J = 1988 (H = 1987)

The model year starts in October (usually)

It seems a lot of these early build cars will have colors that only came on the prior year color charts. My early build '90 has a 1989 color which does not show up on the color charts in the brochures for 1990.

I have a J... so I guess its offical, I have an 88'. Thanks for the info. I am a previous BMW ower and the year changes were more straight forward. It just drives me nuts when I don't understand things.

Thanks again,
Earl
