On a new car, the type of oil, etc will be in the records from the factory and a recommended one for future use. On a used one, I look for the records the PO has and see if he used an oil that I have had good experience with. Then you have to decide whether you want to change or keep using what has been used previously. The PO of my 88 Carrera used Castrol GTX 20w50 and had some leaks. II don't like Castrol, so I went with Valvoline 20w50 VR1 Racing oil. I have no leaks any my engine is almost clean enough to eat of the bottom of it. I'm **** and used steel wool and scotchbrite pads to clean it.
