Default Turn signal switch

I got an '84 Carrera 3.2 that the turn signal stalk is broken on (a piece of paper holds it in the oo position now). Are there any instructions around that anyone knows of on how to remove and replace this item? Obviously the steering wheel comes off, but I'm more curious as to does it have a long pigtail that's a bear to get through the column or something similar. Thanks in advice for the help.

Jim: With a little patience you can do the switch. Remove the wheel, then the upper & lower column covers (it will be obvious which screws to remove). After that remove the switch body screws, and go under the dash with a good light and trace the wire harness. Disconnect all of the wire ends (reference your new switch for this) and just pull the switch out from the front, together with all the wires attached to it.

Jim,
I am a total rookie and I was able to change it out on my 78 w/o problems. Just follow the leads and don't mix up the color coded wires. You will spend some time upside down under your dash.

While based on a 964, the instructions here may be useful.

I found that the easiest way to replace the "zillion" wires that go between the stalk switch and the headlight switch is to do them one by one. That way, you don't have to worry about transposing wires and then trying to figure out where you made your mistake. I also removed the headlight switch, which made the wiring project much easier.

Also, Pelican Part's Wayne D. has this procedure outlined in his 101 Projects book. I did this repair on my '84 as well this past year and it's definitely a DIY project that most mechanically inclined people can do. You do have to struggle a bit with the wiring while upside down (as ulrichd points out), but it's very doable.

Good luck!

Welcome to the 911. This is something that you will have to do periodically, if you keep your car any length of time. It's what I consider one of the weaker points of the 911, after chain tensioners.

I did mine last year. I needed to use my wheel/gear puller to get the plate off behind the steering wheel.
After I losened the old stalk, I cut the wires and pull them to under the dash. It's broken and you're not going to use it again anyway. It will then be easier to pull the new wires through and down, and see where they connect. Take your time, it's a little tedious and be careful not to break the plastic steering column pieces. regards,
Steve

Hey guys, thanks for your helpful suggestions. I picked up the part Thursday afternoon. Saturday morning started the process of changing it out. Took a couple of light taps from a rubber mallet to get the steering wheel off and from there it was just having some patience and learning to work with the blood flowing to your head as you hang upside down under the dash to disconnect and reconnect everything and make sure its right. Works great now. Cancels and everything. The only issue now is the label on the new stalk looks so good and all of my oters are almost if not worn off. Any ideas how to repaint/label the other stalk's icons?

I suspect you could use some white touch up paint and then wipe the excess off with some thinner.

Remember how you did the installation. If you keep your 911 for any length of time you will be in there again. I think I went through 3 on one of my cars in 120,000 miles.
