Played a bit rough today..915 ??'s
Was racing off the line against a MB (I hate myself sometimes) redlined it in first pulled it down to 2nd, not sure if I missed the shift, I think I never got there. Well long story short it wont go into 2nd. Limped home using 1st and 3rd. SOOOO... I don't think it's the synchros (they were rebuilt 5k ago, not that that would matter) It's feels like their is rubber stopping me from goung into 2nd. Bushings?? Best guess, anyone.

I've never been in that part of the car, but I would second your vote for the shifting bushings. The same thing happened to my Saab recently. I thought I ripped up my transmission, and it turned out to be the coupler needed adjusting.

Ocean: You have committed the ultimate 915 sin! You have basically done what a valet would do to your car if you ever let a valet touch it. It would be no surprise to me to learn that you have destroyed the second gear synchro, maybe even knocked a bunch of dog teeth off, etc. The "rubber" feel is probably because the slider can't engage and compress the synchro ring. There is a very slight possibility that it's linkage, but without seeing your car I can't tell. Lean in through the driver's side door, with your head down in front of the driver's seat. Look at the shift lever from that perspective, the bottom few inches (before the bend) should be vertical. If it is, take the car to your favorite shop and have the trans oil drained, what's stuck to the drain plug magnet will tell the tale.

I wooped him at the previous stop light. A new 500SL actually I think 550SL and now that you mention it Pete I think he was wearing a valet uniform. Shame on me. I hate myself right now, atleast that's what I'm telling my wife.

I hope it's not the 2nd synchro but I'm afraid it is. There is something making noise outside the tranny sounds like it's coming from the right rear wheel well. I got under with a flashlight and couldn't find anything. Oh whoa is me.

4 months or 3000 miles whatever comes first. This one would be tough to roll into the garage and casually mention that I thought this was their fault. I'm taking it to my mechanic Brewster tomorrow and see what the verdict is. I just hope I have it back for this weekend. Footnote, I missed a shift in my '70 S about 3 years ago on the same stretch of Pacific Coast Hwy. between Laguna Beach and Newport and bent a bunch of my valves. There was a "looking on the bright side" point to this when I started to type it but somehow now it escapes me. And thank you Ice for not mentioning the 3rd and obvious explanation.

I race through a shop where we all use 915's...the one caveat? You cannot shift it fast! All of us who grew up dreaming of Big Daddy Garlits have to relearn our shifting habits. but this is nothing new. Just my .02.
