Question

I posted earlier that I could hear a noise coming from the fan housing... seems the bearings on the alternator are the culprit... so while I wait for the rear FG parts to come in I decided to remove the alternator to have it rebuilt.

I will be soooo happy when I remove all that CIS stuff and replace it with a beautiful set of PMO carburetors...

I will take the time to clean as I go... now with a lot better access to all those areas... plan to also clean and paint the fan and fan housing...

Now... the surprise I encounter... the housing has what looks like a stress crack... will epoxy (JB Weld) be enough to repair this or should I get it welded? I don't see the crack going all the way... just that spot...

you can see it in this photo in the lower left side...

OK... back from the alternator shop... alternator is fine. So it is down to the housing and the cracks... #$^%$#% new housing needed I guess...

Well.... US$1,000.00 later... new fan housing, US$349.00 (aftermarket in aluminum since Porsche is no longer selling those...), new 11 Blade Alternator Fan, US$175.00 (also in aluminum), and new 90amp alternator, US$475.00 (because I needed the updated alternator to work with all the other parts, housing is for an 84 and requires this alternator)... ordered from Vertex Auto. Everything should be here Tuesday...

I also ordered the nice looking strap from Rennline (via Pelican Parts).

Now I only need to decide what color I will paint (maybe best to powdercoat them since there are all new.... hummm...) them.

So... I have a fine working alternator if anyone is in need for one...

Mandatory duct-tape install photos

It will take some serious rubber to fill those wells...

You are going to need some serious garage space to fill those fenders!

I was taking a look at an 86 and has a couple extras (headers, exhaust, short shifter) and it was white, but the guy who painted I think ran out of masking tape 993 turbo rims though.

Nothing seems to be straight forward... rear bolts on the new alternator are different... so now I have to go out and get the correct size nuts...

Educated guess... I looked at a lot of photos... a few folks would cut all around the door border, side window, etc... I could not do that since I needed some metal behind the side sill/scoop...

For others, like me, where I am glueing these qtr panels to the metal, I need to leave at least 2" of area for the adhesive.

I did not get the brake ducts that go there... not for now at least... that will finish the look of that big side opening...

I also decided not to remove the window to install the panel... I cut the FG panel instead. I will blend in the part to the side metal instead. I still have to remove the window for when it comes time to paint...

Well... work time is over... time to do the next side. Will post more photos after that one is done.
