'88 targa here
140-145 once with the top off, very loud, and I was scared the back window would pop out.
Redline in 5th which should be around 148-152. Huge rush. Only a front spoiler, no problems, but then I didn't try to turn either.

I don't think I've had my Porsche up past 135 or so. But on a track, when you're turning, 130 can be pretty darned involving...
On the flipside, I recently was out in the middle of the Mojave desert in my Jaguar, which is electronically limited to either 150 or 155. I decided I'd find out which of those two numbers it was. I got it up to 150 -- before I decided I was gaining on an unsuspecting minivan much too quickly and let off. I didn't find the speed limiter, but honestly? In a modern car like that, the experience was really about as dull as dishwater. Aside from more wind noise, the car seemed as stable and serene as it would be at 70.
For some reason, speed is a lot more fun in a Porsche.

I've had mine up to about 139mph (225km/h)on the speedo but interestingly enough, that only registered 133mph (215.8km/h) on my GPS. I somehow think the GPS is more accurate. I have found about the same difference on many occasions. It seems to be worse at higher speeds. How accurate are Porsche speedos anyway? At that speed, I was still accelerating and feel confident that it will do over 140. It just gets loud in the Cabrio.

I recently had my '87 Carrera to 135mph. A few years ago I got to drive a 993 in Germany. We got that one to about 165mph or 265km/h. That was a rush! Once, while hitchiking in Germany, a guy in an M3 picked me up. We were at about 140mph in the left lane when we were passed on the RIGHT by a motorcycle with TWO people on it -- and passed like we were standing still!

On level ground, I can probably push mine 2 or 3 MPH *tops*; anything beyond that gets dicey trying to jump in and hit the brake...
As to driving, I hit ~155 a couple weeks ago (speedo only goes to 150) and that put me ~6000-6100 RPM. It was very stable, but very loud. Witnesses reported that my top was poofed up quite a bit, too.

Nice Thom. I was think the same thing when I saw the topic so it gave me a good laugh..hope the boss wasn't listening.
I have a 3.0 in my 76S with 50 series tires on 16 inch Fuchs. Good for acceleration not so good for top end, but I rarely visit those numbers. I would guess 120 before I decided to back off as I was running out of clear road ahead. Wonder what my top speed is with those tires?

THOM: How did you go 155mph with only 234hp? I also would like to know how did you go that speed pulling that wing? Even going down Mt. Everest with a tail wind I find that hard to believe. If you took off the wing and got rid of that additional drag you could get a extra 10mph or maybe even 15mph give it a try. Then you would get up to the same top end mph as a lexus sedan.

I had my '87 Carrera hitting the rev. limiter in 5th at Pocono. I think that puts me at about 155mph+/- according to the tranny chart in my owners manual I never trust speedometers anyway, I live by the tach....

I've seen 6500rpm in 4th, not sure how fast that is. Probably about 160mph. I had it there for about 5 minutes (the roads are very straight and deserted in most of Saskatchewan) and my oil temp never got over the halfway mark. It felt like the car could do that tank after tank. Awesome.
