I'd go for a Carrera over an SC any day. Why deprive yourself of the power or the 3.2?

For $25K you can get the best possible example of a Carrera you can find. The G50 was/is to be an improvement over the 915, but I wouldn't let that dictate my purchase if you find a pre-87.

I'm with Jay H and enjoy the feel of the tranny in my '84. With refreshed shifter bushings, a good clutch (don't forget the new clutch cable!) and good gear oil, there is nothing wrong with a 915 tranny.

I don't know, first of all I love my Carrera, it would be hard to sway me. Secondly, if they're that much more impressive, I'm sure I can find another Carrera with a few more tricks.....

There's a reason they call them Semi Carreras.

+1 Jay! (82 SC Euro, no AC, SSIs, 2500 lbs, manly 915 trans, approx. 220 hp - do the math, lbs. per hp.) This being my 1st Porsche (coming off a 99 Vette hardtop), I wanted to get back to light and visceral - shopped Carreras and C2s then discovered the bullet proof SC - Serious Car (gotta be; it's my daily driver) - never been sorry, want nothing newer (heavier, plusher).

Well we're pretty close on the old weight to HP ratio, mine is 2670bs with the rollbar and 3/4 tank, and is 240hp. Not plush, not too heavy.
Remember Targas weighed more for added stiffening.

The lighter of two cars with the same power to weight ratio, all other factors being equal, will be nimbler and corner with less drama (basic physics).

If I had the talent/money to keep it running I'd have an even older, lighter model - but that's just me.

I had some of my most memorable boy racer highs driving my mighty 48 hp Bugeyed Sprite as if I had a death wish (almost granted to me on several occasions) when I was just out of highschool .

You are spot-on with regard to lighter being nimbler, but that's why I strive to improve my skills on the track-so that hopefully all factors aren't equal.

My goal in the next few years is to significantly reduce the weight in my car. It will probably include some level of backdate. I probably should've done this a few years ago when she went under the paintgun.

one thing i like about my 84 3.2 targa is that you get a little of both worlds- it's the only carrera that still has the old SC interior, but at the same time has the larger engine, with some really key mechanical improvements that made a great and reliable car even better.

in the end just find one that's well sorted, whatever you decide on. first read pete z's book and you'll be so much more prepared......i got it for xmas and could have read the whole thing in a day or two if i didn't force myself to go slow....
