Bravo to you guys who are saving a couple extra cars from certain death! Restoring is a act of love, no doubt

"Bravo to you guy who are saving a couple extra cars from certain death!"
Hear! Hear! Everyone who is doing this kind of effort - take the weekend off (except working on the car, of course) - buy yourself a beer!

Thanks Jeff, your car looks great. Also, thanks Daniel, Ked and Murphyslaw1978. I have not yet found a painter to do the work, but I have talked to 3 shops about my car and they tell me its going to cost me somewhere around 4,500 to 5,000 just to paint it. I think thats really high after doing all this work myself. What should I be looking to pay?

Sounds really high for what you want. I just can't see them having to put that much time into it.

OK... I'm thinking of letting a shop takeover the paint part of my project. the owner told me that they will take off all of the old paint and start over with new primer, sealer, paint, clear coat and line-up the doors hood and trunk too. All this for $ 3,000 . I will need to put it back together myself . should I go for it or keep looking ?

Wow, run to that painter. Just ask to see some of their work to make sure you are satisfied with the quality they will crank out. I just had a painter tell me it would be 10k minimum to go down to bare metal, including the trunk and engine compartment. $3000 seems very reasonable. Possibly he is wrong so get it in writing. My painter said the clear coat alone, not including the labor but just the clear paint, would be $1100 dollars if Glasurit.

I think I just got lucky.
I was coming home from work and saw a car that looked like someone was working on, and getting a new paint job just like me . So I stopped, and asked where he was going to get the paint sprayed on at because I am looking for a good place to have my paint job done. Then he told me that the car was not his and his son was doing all of the work himself and loves to paint cars . It took some time to hunt down his son because he works at night . I got a chance to meet him on his off day and he told me he had been painting cars for about 8 years . I asked him to come over to take a look at my car, to see if he could tell me if was doing the prep work the right way. He looked all over the car and then stared to feel all over the car getting red dry paint all over his hands. He could feel dings that I could not see and bubbles under the paint. He said he would take over doing the prep and will paint it too! I told him that was COOL!. I don't want to tell you guys the price until its done then you can tell me what you guys think I paid. I really hope its going to come out good . Yes I have seen some of his work and the cars look nice. No he has not painted a porsche before.

You're in So.Cal. Go to Tiajuana. Half supervise/ half hang out at Adalitas and drink Coronas. Get some internet education on proper prep and paint techniques. Negotiate a good price and than spif the owner/manager for a five star job. Buy and take the paint with you if you are so inclined. Stay the weekend and you'll have a nice paint job. I've done it and it was 1/3 of the price for a comparable paint job stateside.
