911 is now tucked away in it's new garage for the winter, what do you guys use for trickle chargers?

The Porsche one is 119.00, worth it? I'm dirt poor after the house purchase!

New house has only one garage so the Boxster will suffer outside

I have a small Schumacher trickle charger mounted permanently in my car. It sits right in front of the battery and has a little a/c pigtail. When I'm not going to drive the car for awhile, I simply hook an extension cord to the charger. I think I paid less than $30 for the charger at my local Kragen or Autozone a few years ago, and it was very simple to install using existing holes in the car.

I also have a 1.5 amp Schumacher trickle charger like Scott B mentions. I paid $24 for it. While the Porsche charger is quite nice, it's not $119 of nice. Get the Schumacher unit.

I've got a Craftsman battery charger/slow charger. It usually runs about $ 65, but I got it on sale for $ 30.

The current model battery trickle charger available from Porsche are designed for use with the latest car models.

Vintage Porsche models, 70's - 80's have larger diameter cigarette lighter receptacles and the current Porsche battery tender's cigarette lighter attachment doesn't fit well. You'll need to buy a cheap plastic "spacer" but the fitment isn't perfect with it either.

If you have an older 911 I'd stick to alligator style clip battery tenders and skip the Porsche model completely.

I also have a Schumacher which is ok, but my ultimate solution to battery maintanence has been the use of a quick-disconnect cable connection. I have them on 2 of my cars and they work perfectly--my 944 batteries previously drained quickly without use--now I just go out, connect the terminal (about 1 minute) and the battery is fully-charged. I got mine at a discount auto place for less than $7. Took about 10 minutes to attach to the cable.

charger needs to be connected to the outlet for source. Disconnect battery will kill the lock, Stereo memory, alrm, etc.
I'll wait until they come out with solar charger :lol:

There are lots of neat solar chargers out there for many applications. A quick google.com search will reveal a few sources for these solar battery chargers.

I was considering actually use a solar charger for my motorcycle since my condo building doesn't have any electrical outlets in the garage. I was hoping that the internal lighting would have enough "solar" energy, but not sure.

I bet a call to one of these manufacturers of the solar chargers would be able to tell you if indoor lighting would be effective enough for their product. I know I researched a few of these solar powered battery chargers before I bought my '84 this spring. Many of the chargers had exact specs on how much they would charge with a given amount of sunlight.

no - indoor lighting is not powerful enough -- it took plants many millions of years to be able to "derive a low power organism that runs in strong shade"

another way to think of it - the difference between strong sun and the min. dim light you can see is.... <drum roll> 14 orders of magnitude -- that is 10 raised to the 14th power (or followed by 14 zeros). Don't let your eye trick you - it is a super evolved detection instrument and uses different types of sensors that it switches to from dim light (rod cells) to bright light (sun light). No solar cell can come close to that.

Does your Schumacher charger cause your car to run other cars off the road, or come to a dead stop blocking the Rascasse turn when you happen to be driving it in Monaco ? Does your car run well only when you're driving it, but when anyone else (i.e. a mate) climb behind the wheel, suddenly the car runs as if it's inferior spec ?
