I owned an 89 964 C4 abd an 86 Carrera at the same time. The 964 was hands down the better for long drives...my wife and I drove it to NC from Florida with no problem. My 86 would have been more tiring.

BUT...the 964 though a great great car was relatively boring for me and in the end I sold it. Kept the old high mileage 86 and I love it.

I've driven both my '65 SC & '87 Carrera on multi-thousand mile trips, w/ legs over 1000mi / day. The '87 was far more comfortable. The '65 delivered at least as much smiles/mile.

I would get the best SC or Carrera I could, fix the little things. Get the car tuned and primed for the trip and start a love affair with the car that will never end. If all you are is concerned about comfort, fly or rent a Lincoln Town Car. If you want a life long memorable Porsche experience do what I prescribe.

I have a 1981 928S and a 89 911 cab. I drove the 928 back from Phoenix to Los Angeles. It was a nice ride. I drove the 911 back from Kansas over the course of 2 days. Both were fine. The 928 sits lower and your feet stick out straight. In the 911 I find that you sit more up right which I prefer. But the 928 is a more quiet of a ride.

It's funny the common quip is "buy the best latest year model you can afford". In my humble opinion buy the best earliest year model you can afford. I guess it all depends on what your definition of better is.

928 is the greatest Porsche Touring car, but being the age of even the newest 928, you could be asking for trouble if you break down in an area of the country, that has probably never seen one, let alone would know how to fix it.

Most all 78 and up air cooled 911's are pretty robust, as long as it checks out before you leave (and you keep a DME relay in the glove box) chances are slim and none of any stranding issues.

Personally, I think a Cayenne would be fun, as they can haul *** in comfort down a highway, and then keep going when the weather turns, or the pavement ends for some off the path adventure

I haqve a 928 and have taken it to SF from LA a couple of times and the memories are all about the destination. I've got a Carrera 3.2 and made the same trip and thememories were all about the trip up and back. Just me I love the classic (er) driving experience. Had a Q45 took a trip up to Oregon and countless Vegas trips and it was like sitting in my La Z Boy the whole way but I can do that at home.

I dont miss my 928 I felt as though that the car was going to grenade at any time. Or the smallest piece would go out and leave me stranded. Or the TB/WP would go out leveing me stranded and a damaged engine, Or the A/c would go out leaving sweting my nuts off in Texas, Or the PS would go out Or the thrust bearing would grind out. on and on . Idonthave those issues with the 911 thank god

Loaded, I feel your felt pain. They didn't put that monsterous warning light (about the size of a suit case) on the center panel for nothing

Ok. my two cents - my~100K '86 cab, original seats, is very comfortable for long trips and fun to drive even on the highway - & as I understand it, 911 parts ,and even mechanics, are more available for this Porsche model than any other ( I carry the "101 Projects' just in case I have a problem and encounter someone w/ skills but no specific knowledge - I suppose you could carry a Bentley or Haynes as well).

But - I do miss having viable A/C - steamy, rainy daysare the worst - other than that, its all good

Well, the problem is that there are tiny holes in the AC lines, believe it or not, and this presents the need to refill it almost regularly (every couple years). Additionally, if you do not turn on the AC at least once per month in the off-season (winter, fall, spring), then the seals dry up and start leaking freon.

So, basically, it blows cold and strong with regular use and regular recharging.
