Default Cooling problems, how to fix ?

My neighboor has a 911, oil cooled, and he wants to track it at Laguna Seca soon, so i want to post if theirs any relatively cheap mods he can do to increase the efficenty of cooling the car down ?

He took the heater core pipe out, and that has really helped out alot, i was thinking perhaps:

Bigger fan? or something like that ?

Thanks and happy new years!

What type of oil cooler does he have? The trombone oil cooler is marginal in warm weather and ineffective in hot weather. An upgrade to a Carrera cooler is needed if he has the trombone.

An air scoop to the oil cooler work very well.

Install the 11-blade fan if the current fan is only the 5-blade one.

Hi F1,

It would help if you noted what year car, and what has been done, if anything, to the engine, car, or cooling system.

Hi F1,

Well, the year of the car would help indicate what cooler, if any. Look up into the right front fender well, located up and forward, and you'll see no pipes (no cooler), a large bend "paperclip" or "trombone" looking set of pipes (the so-called trombone cooler), possibly a rectangular arrangement of brass tubes (euro 28-row brass cooler), or a black, finned oil cooler about 10"x15" that looks like a radiator.

The trombone is, IMHO, nearly useless in a track setting. The brass one is fine for street and marginal for track work on hot days. The carrera-type (the finned one) is the minimum to have for a track-driven car. Once that is fitted, there are some thnigs you can do to increase its efficiency, but first determine what your friend has. The latter will set you back $300-400 if you DIY ; I don't know if that qualifies as "cheap" but it is worth every penny as it is very effective in controlling oil temps on a stock engine.

If your friend is not willing to do such now and he has at least a trombone, you can suggest that he remove the right parking lamp to add airflow to the trombone, and go to a high-quality oil, either a synth or racing oil for the elevated tems he will likely experience. Hope this helps you a bit

As the others note, without knowing more details it is very hard to provide meaningfull assistance.

Most important is the year, engine displcement, and what kind of external cooling (if any).

Over at the Pelican BBS, Grady Clay has posted the Rubbermaid Solution

Share more information and maybe we can get you to where you want to be.

I know a 3.2 just N of Sacramento w/fender cooler that sees 10F drop with those replacemrnt scoops for lamp.
