I always am amused by the term midlife crisis. I will be 49 in three months. I have had my car for about 8 years so I guess I was 40 when I bought it. Not long after getting it someone asked me if I was going thru an midlife crisis. Up to that point I had never considered buying this car having anything to do with age.

My response was no, the reason I bought it is because ever since being about 10 years old watching Porsches race I wanted one. It just so happens I could not really afford one until that age.
Last year I went and got a competition license with the SCCA. I am just getting to point were I can enjoy the fruits of my labor.

Shoot, I still haven't figured out what I am going to be when I grow up so I don't factor in any feelings about age. I say if you can afford it go for it.

Go for it and enjoy it. Buying my first porsche, just after meeting my wife, was another 'life celebration' a few years ago but coincidently the year I bought my 993 I turned 50. I like the term 'life celebration' much better. There so much more fun to be had - Drivers Ed is a blast.

It doesn't matter how old you are.....as long as you love the car. I'm 19 and have a '76 911S and an '85 944. Get the car and enjoy!

Steve G, love the "Cars" avatar. Great movie. I haven't decided if I'm going to do Route 66 on the motorcycle or the Porsche.

In regards to "midlife crisis," the only crisis would be passing up the opportunity to buy one of these cars.

Wow, this thread went everywhere, but it's a great one.

Sure, the Rush song is about an Italian car, but who cares?

If you're a poor student with little cash, you can drive a Porsche. Just, maybe not today.

I'm 40, and I've never owned one, but something recently re-awoke the dream. It wasn't turning 40. It was the sudden realization that it was a financial and utilitarian possibility.

I'm still looking out 3-5 years, but I'm starting my education, now.

Meanwhile, I did just buy a slot car set...for me!

What is age?

My goal was to own a 911 by the time I was 40.

1989 3.2 at 37 years old.

I admit to feeling guilty about owning one of the best cars ever made in the world at such a young age. The cure is to sit in it and start it up.

By the way, I am married w/a son.

They didn't have a say in the matter, first-time in our 13 year marriage. She understood.....that's why I keep her

Total BS. You SHOULD have bought one YEARS ago.

(I bought my first Porsche when I was 19). These things keep you young.

The secret to the good life was found once on the side wall of an ancient garage, unearthed several years ago near the site of the La Brea tar pits:

"The secret to the good life...

Older whiskey, younger woman, and faster Porsches..."

I am the original poster. I am also one of those guys under the thread "I want a Porsche ..... wife says no" that was posted more than a year ago.
This may sound very silly, I have an appointment to look at a 924 tomorrow. Reason: That's the cheapest Porsche you can get in the market, and have a better financial case in front of my wife.

2000 Audi A4 Turbo Quattro Sport
1998 BMW 318ti M-Tech Sport
1998 Chevy Venture Minivan

Michael, I have to tell you, I'd bet there is a way to present your case to your wife and she won't be able to "reasonably" say no. If the reason is financial, you can prove that owning a 911 is cheaper than buying a Honda Accord. I know, because I've done the cost-benefit analysis before.

Default Buy one!

We could argue over which Porsche to buy first, but we all obviously agree that you need to move forward and acheive this dream as soon as reasonably possible.

Is a cost analysis the issue, or just your age?

Until your wife likes a Porsche, she is not likely to be on your side. Mine just tolerates my 911, but she loved my 928. Maybe you should let her pick the first one and go from there.

It's all part of growing up.

I got mine at age 50, started doing DE's and have been kicking myself for not getting the Pcar sooner.

I gets harder and harder to get in and out of these low cars every year, so don't wait too long.
