Default Simples Question for '88....

I finally have my 3.2 out of the shop after work being done right after purchase. Now, I drove many cars before I decided on this one but the SC's and 964's obviously didn't have this lighted switch between the seats on the floor.

Before my manual comes in the mail, can someone tell me what it is for? The top part was missing.

Thanks!!

A few pics of car as well.

Are you talking about the heating system? On my 88 Targa, I have 2 red handles on either side of the switch which control the heater valves and rear heater blower. The other switch is probably the footwell blowers speed switch...

Thanks, but I am refering to the small lighted switch on the floor below the heater controls on the left of the ebrake. You can barely see it in the first pic.

It runs the footwell blowers, which some call "defrost." There is a lot to know about the confusing ventilation system in these cars. Do a search on footwell blowers and you'll see...

I'm not sure I see what you're talking about unless it's that 'whatever' that's on the right hand side of the e-brake...in that case, it's not stock. Could you be looking at something related to an aftermarket alarm, etc.? BTW, welcome to the CE club....I have your car's identical twin sister

Thanks KC911, I'll try to get a better pic to post. It seemed stock since it lights up with the typical low glow dash bulb. Stumbled on the CE by mistake and made a deal. It hadn't been washed or waxed in a while, the paint is atarting to shine through all the grime left on by the PO!

The item in question is the light that indicates which way to pull on the heat levers for allowing more heat into the cabin . This lamp on A4's car is missing it's red cover (more black like in appearance when the lamp is not lit) and is part number 914-632-107-00 (for the whole assembly).

This is not aftermarket and was a stock/factory item from 1973.5(?) to 1989 for cars with manual heating. Manual heating is easy to identify by the two levers and a 4 position switch verses just the 10 position switch which is called 'automatic' heating.

Hope this helps,

Jay

Thanks Jay!

Here's a closer pic. Looks like I'm off to the used parts bin on this one!

I killed the light on mine - it reflects against the inside windshield at night.

Wow, I didn't even see that light. I don't think it's on my 88 Targa...

The cap that goes on that piece should say defrost on it. It has an arrow pointing to the rear of the car that has "on" by it indicating if you want to defrost you need to pull the heater levers up. It has another arrow on it pointing the other direction indicating to push the levers down for "off". It is a factory piece and not aftermarket.
