To me the aesthetic of the tail is partially dependant on the size of the rear fenders and the cars color. A "turbo" tail looks awfull on a narrow fendered car. Overkill. I had a duck on my SC and loved it. I think the '84-89 Carerra tail (like the pre intercooled turbo tail) to provide a nice balance and looks good too. Then again, no tail can look just as mean!. Ah.. nothing like the "little" things to worry about.
Go DUCK!

I like the clean look of a 911 without a tail! If I had a track car I would have a huge tail for performance reasons. On the other hand an old RS with a ducktail is still COOL!

I puchased mine with an aftermarket tail attached. I had thought about removing it, but women are drawn to the car like it was a magnet. Tail stays.
BTW I was given an address today by a woman who wrote ''48 D''. I had to laugh.

I haven't noticed a difference over the years. At high speed you are more likely to notice suspension short comings than aero ones. How many 100+mph corners do you drive through?
Somewhere is a graph showing the aero benefit of the tails, all shown on one graph. IIRC, it isin't till about 100-110mph that the "carerra/early turbo" and "turbo (w/ intercooler)" tails show a significant advantage in reducing lift than the duck. Since my car topped out at about 137 (per the factory manual and gearing) I ignored the aero benefit for the wieght benefit (lightness) of the duck tail.
