Default chip+bypass+muff for $ OR SSI+muff for $$???

Need some advise on Exhaust mods...I've got a stock 85 Carrera and have been researching performance mods for the spring. Street car mainly, might do a DE this coming year. Question: If you were spending your own hard-earned money, would you:

A. Get a SW Chip + a cat bypass + M&K 1 in 1 out for around $1000 parts OR
B. Get SSIs + M&K 2 in 1 out for around for around $1800 parts

Seems like performance increase of the two are close?
Will the M&K muff help hp/torque on option A, or just sound good.

What say Ye?

I did a cat bypass and monty muffler on my 2.7 and i'm happy with the results both in terms of a moderate power increase...plus its souns mean

But if your budget allows go the SSIs & 2 in 1 out (remember you have to change oil lines to clear the SSIs.

Then to top it off do the SW chip

SSIs are the pre-1975 style extractors/headers. They are less restrictive than the later headers and flow into a 2-inlet rear muffler. unlike the later headers which join (via a crossover pipe) and flow into a single inlet muffer (via a pre-muffler)

Monty is an australian brand of aftermaket exhaust systems/mufflers.

M&K is a popular US brand of muffler.

Depends.

A) do you have the coin to not care?
B) Are you prepared to make the move semi-permanently to the 2-in setup, bypassing the cat?

If there's hesitation, go your #1 choice. If you have the means & desire, I'd go #2, and as mentioned, add the chip later.

I have the Fabspeed bypass & the 1-/1- M&K, along with a Weltmeister chip. The '84's 204hp engine is making 204 at the wheels now, and that's without Steve's likely-to-be-better chip. On the other hand, there's a local guy here who has an SC w/ 170k+, put SSIs & a dual in setup, and his is much better than before.

Good luck!

GL - FWIW - When I bought my SC, the recommened "bolt-ons" for improved engine performance were the SSI's and the pre-74 Sport exhausts (typically 2 in - 1 out). When I began doing DE's I was suprised at how few Carreras used the SSI's. Almost everyone Carrera owner I asked told me that the SSI performance improvement was marginal at best, and the consensus was the chip offered the best 'bang for the buck'. You might want to see if this is covered in Bruce Anderson's "Performance Handbook".

The SSI's diameter makes for a nice improvement on the stock SC's exhaust. With the Carrera's larger displacement, the improvement is very slight -- not really worth the expense, in my opinion. The proven path is the chip/bypass/sport-muffler.

If I remember correctly SSIs are typically the best setup up through the SCs, but are a bit too restrictive for the 3.2s unless special steps are taken. On a Carrera, a premuffler/sport muffler/SW chip combo will yield almost the same results at a more reasonable cost (and is easier to get past the smog police).

I think if was going to invest some bucks I would want to see some chassis dyno results like Fred noted. Anybody have the results or links?

I wasn't concerned with the actual dyno numbers, but I've got a Fabspeed euro premuffler/GHL single in/out muffler/SW chip combo on my car, and it it a 'proven comination' for the Carreras. I actually did some dyno comparisions (swapping the SW chip out with a stock chip between runs), but these were after I already had the premuffler/sport muffler installed. If the M&Ks had been available back then, I would probably have one instead of the GHL.

So is the consensus SSIs do not make that much of a difference to justify the cost on 3.2's? I am getting ready to do this upgrade myself and only want to do it once.

I haven't dyno'd the M&K, though I did do the Fabspeed Pre-Muffler / Stock Muffler, and also the Fabspeed Muffler Bypass, from memory.

Would be interested to see the M&K, especially since the plugs & wires have been replaced now - the orig. 22 yo wires were used on the 1st pulls.

Just had SSI's and dual in single out performance muffler installed on a brand new rebuild of an '88 3.2- the results 251 HP on the dyno! Sounds great and seat of the pants tells me that this was well worth the money. If you don't have to smog the car in your state, I recommend the SSI's with the pre '74 retrofit.
