Default Pre-Muffler advantage vs disadvantage?

My 78' SC has a pre muffler but apparently there is nothing actually IN there, ie no baffles or anything.. can see right down the pike.. anyway.. any advantage in replacing it or disadvantage either way?

Thanks!

The Euro pre-muffler is actually straight through on the inside, but has some baffle holes axially along the tube. A Euro pre-muffler pipe should have the shape of a "cherry bomb muffler" on the outside. A non-Euro pre-muffler is also commonly known as a "test pipe" and is a straight pipe from where the two pipes coming off the heat exchanger join and a welded on flange where the muffler attaches. Typically the Euro is a little quieter due to the baffling inside. Either one is a replacement for the Cat Converter. New Cat's can cost quite a bit of money. If you don't have emission testing, that would be the way to go.

There are a number of rennlisters who have either replaced the pre-muffler with a straight length of pipe or used a fab-speed pre-muffler, myself included. In either case the exhaust will flow a lot better, especially when combined with an aftermarket rear muffler, and sound a whole lot angrier.
