Painting petals on black-centered Fuchs (with photos)
Hi All,
My project this afternoon was to start painting the "petals"
on my Fuchs wheels. The car is an '83 SC Cab with 16" Fuchs
with black painted centres. I've been noticing lots of great
photos of older 911s with silver petals in the big photos thread,
like this one:

I really like this look, and since the paint on my wheels needs
attention anyway, I decided to do a quick rattle-can paint job
to see how it looks on my sliver cab. If it sucks I can always
strip it off and redo the black paint.
I think the highlighted petals is really how these guys intended
Fuchs to look:
I started out by popping off the black hubcap, roughing
up the surface with a scotchbrite pad and washing with tar and
grease remover...
Then I masked up using stretchy blue electrical tape.
It goes round bends better than masking tape...
I finished masking by cutting a hole in a plastic drop-sheet and
filling in the gaps with wide masking tape...
I applied 4 thin coats of VHT "Bright Aluminium" from a rattle can...
This is the result...
Next problem was the hub-cap. It started off black and looks
like it has a coat of fresh paint some time during its life.
The paint came of quite easily with a disk of scotchbrite on
the end of a dremmel, but underneath was a much harder finish,
probably anodised. I removed this with fine grit sandpaper,
followed with a thorough scotchbright rubdown to get rid of
sanding marks. I finished up getting a brushed look by applying
the scotchbright pad in just one direction. This matches the
new paint nicely, not too shiny...
Here is the final result:
Now I just need another couple of spare afternoons to do the other three wheels :)

The 'windmilll' look was popular with the Fuchs early in their lives. As you may or may not know, the Fushs alloys got that look because they were painted by dipping them into a vat of black paint. Over time the black centers look became popular and they simply dipped them deeper.
