Post EFI for 2.7l 210BHP '74 Carrera RS Engine

About two months ago I posted a topic regarding Weber Alpha Engine Management System, with no return. Since in the meantime it turned out that such a system is very expensive, I am looking for another fuel injection + engine management system that may improve the driveability and fuel economy of a 2.7l 210BHP standard Carrera RS engine. That engine has been completely overhauled six years ago and since then it run about 15K miles. One option could be PMO or Weber carbs, but I would prefer EFI. Does somebody have a suggestion?

Hi Guenther,

I would say that for your needs, e.g. driveability and fuel economy there is only one good solution:
I would install a 3.6 liter engine from a 964 engine. These engines can be found used and are not too expensive (you see them on ebay.de )
Apart from excellent fuel economy these engineas are also catalythic and have very low toxic gas emissions compared to a 2.7 Carrera engine.

You also get more power (250 hp)

Andreas

P.S. Why do you complain about the driveability of the engine. I have a similar engine (2.4S) and one the MFI pump was set up properly I never complaint again about driveability at all. These engine can run very smooth also in the 1500 -3000 rpm range.

I saw a 74 once that the owner had installed a motronic setup off of a 3.2 onto the 2.7. Not sure of the details though.

You have arguably the best Porsche engine for a road car, my vote would be to live with it.

There is some good MFI info here:

This is a little weird - carbs shouldn't work any better than a well set up MFI system.

How much is too expensive? I have an MFI system converted to take EFI injectors and a MoTeC computer. If you have a spare set if MFI throttle bodies this can save some $$$$.

But it sure adds up cost-wise ----> a bunch of sensors, custom fabrication (which I didn't really pay for), plus dyno time... I don't think there is a cheap way.

Try this link:

It is Australian dollars so US$ are about 1/2. They are cheaper than www.twminjection.com (I think).
