Unhappy DME Gebusted?

My wrench, who works on Brit iron rather than on Porsches tells me the DME in my 87 Carrera, which had been stored in his garage for approx. a year needs to be replaced. He said, "no gas/no spark".
Q: (1) What is the likelihood of DME failure?
(2) Can a DME be tested and, if so, how?
(3) If it must be replaced, are there upgrades to what was current in 87?
(4) If it must be replaced does anyone have recommendations for sources and prices?

Thanks everyone for your help. Ad <ayeaman@erols.com>

Perhapd I can shed some light on this problem.

A 1) Not very likely. Its not impossibel ofcourse but a No spark; No fuel problem suggests a DME relay failure which is VERY common.

(2) Not easily without the whole car or a wiring harness and emulator.

(3) No upgrades, you gotta use the same generation DME for your car. You can however, change the Engine Management System to Motec or something similar but this would be VERY expensive for no real gains on a smog-regulated engine.

(4) A Motec system comparable to the OEM Bosch would be well over $ 5000.

If you really need a DME, a new or good used one would be less expensive,...

Sorry, just posted your post! I understand folks ofter replace the relay when encountering fuel/ ignition problems. I think it's under $50
