where is dipstick in 87 carerra?

You need to unscrew the oil filler cap. It should be located inside. Once you remove it, be careful not to drop it in, it goes through a small hole that holds it.
You need to check the oil when the engine is running and fully warmed up.

Thanks for confirming that it was funny.....
and also the location...
That was my first response to my friend, about looking inside the oil filler. It was not there, so I guess it's lost.

Joon,
Just to elaborate...
On the older 911s there is an oil filler cap on the right side of the engine bay. When you unscrew this, there is a small metal dipstick (it is the same color as the filler neck/cap...metal..no orange or red handle or anything). If you don't look carefully, you could actually miss seeing it on first inspecition. It goes into a small sleeve that runs along the side of the filler neck. Many people, when reinstalling the dipstick, miss the hole, and the dipstick then falls into the oil tank. Most, if that is the only one they have lost, just buy another and leave the old one in the tank.

Pete gave me some good advice about bending a coat hanger and fishing aound for it through the drain hole on the oil tank. I want it to be oficially known i did not drop it in ... :-) I was having trouble with the tank sender at the time and thought it may have been a dropped in dipstick interfereing . turned out to be a bad sender...

Race Car
The sick part of me has always wondered what would happen if I let go of it.
You probably need to know that you have to check the oil while the car is hot and the engine is idling.
Generally only fill to the half way mark on the dipstick.
Ignore the dash gauge. It was put there to see if anyone notices that it's reading empty.
