Hi,

I'm about to order this oil (amazon dot com) for my first oil change, and just wonder if it's the appropriate oil for my Targa.

That's what I use. It does cost a bit more but it's worth it to me. If you do a search here you find lots of debate for different brands of oil.

Good stuff,............I've been using this since 1967 although its been reformulated like all oils to reduce the Z-P-S additives that shorten catalytic converter life as mandated by EPA,...

Thats another whole story unto itself.

I use Valvoline 20/50 VR1 in my 88 Carrera 3.2 l motor and have for a long time. However, I have only been paying $2.79 a quart for it at Pep Boys and Autozone. With tax it is less than $37.00. If total cost for you is $43 , then it is a deal if you can not get it locally. You don't indicate where you are from, but if you have auto suppliers in town, see if they carry it locally. it's been around awhile.

So VR1 it is then. I contacted several Autozone stores here in southern California, and the price is $2.99 a quart. Pep Boys don't carry the 'racing' stuff. BTW, the $43 I quoted earlier includes shipping. Glad that you're back, Steve!

Steve, do you recommend we use an additive w/ ZPS for those of us not catalytically challenged, with old 911s or 356s having high mileage? if so, which one? thanks.

Indeed, I do,...

With the recent (2 yrs) accelerated rates of wear we see on cams, rockers, followers and other components that always used to go the distance, I think its prudent to do so.

GM makes a dandy one in a small bottle that works very nicely.

You can buy 5 gallon pails & 55 gallon drums from a local distributor, but its a LOT more expensive than the 1 qt bottles unless you make a large, long-term commitment like a shop/dealership must do.

Does Mobil 1 have the ZPS additive, or do you recommend using this GM additive when using Mobil 1 as well?

Do you use with each oil change?

Which is better...Mobil 1 or Valvoline?

Oils have been reformulated. The Z-P-S additives have been reduced to almost nothing or removed from the majority of engine oils approved for road use due to cat contamination.

Mobil 1 is better than VR-1, but for different reasons,......

I use the Z-P-S additive with any oil but the jury is still out on how often to use it to prevent component wear. That may take some time to learn so I'm using some at each oil change.

Just MHO, of course.
