Red face Wheel size changes

The Rat is a 1983SC that came to me with 160k. Besides being MAACOS first paint job (she's being stripped and redone as we speak)the car came with 17" Cup wheels and 45 profile Dunlops. Rides like a brick. I want to sell the wheel and tires and replace them with 16' Fuchs. Can someone explain to me what 7-8-16-offset-spacer etc is all about? The car is at the body shop, the tranny is 30 miles away having the synchros done, the engine is on the floor behind be having minor surgery. I am also doing the suspension although the shocks aren't leaking. What is with teh wheel and tore jargon???

Rat,

If you haven't already, you might want to read the 911SC FAQ which talks about Fuchs and offsets. You can find it at http://tech.rennlist.com

Rat:
When you look for 8" Fuchs, make sure you get 911 offsets. The 944 8" Fuchs will be spaced too far in on the back of a 911 and will look funny. Porsche had an 8" fuchs for the 86 944T. The 911 offset is 11mm, the 944 is 23mm.
The 16x7s for both cars were 23mm.

To find this, look on the insides of the spokes. One of them will have a stamp that says ET (then the number) ex: 911 8 inch Fuchs will say ET 11.

Welcome to the club!
Don't ask me what the proper explanation is for offsets because I couldn't give it to you.

Thanks for responses. I have someone trying to sell me 16x6's that have been remanned but they can't tell me exactly what they came off. Based on what you are saying they probably did not come from the 944, but I don't want the 6 anyway.I didn't know that about the 944T's so again, thanks. I'll also check the FAQ. You guys who have been into P cars for a while wil probably chuckle, but this is my first one, always wanted one, and I'm having a blast.

There's a good article in the Jan. 2002 issue of PCA Panorama about 911 wheel fitments. Good article to get you familiar with the different wheel sizes.
