Default Help, please, adjusting H-1's

The H-1 headlamps have 4 adjusting screws - 2 towards the top of the headlight rim, one on the inside and one on the outside, and 2 towards the bottom of the rim, again "inside & outside". Please advise which screws are for the vertical adjustment and which are for the horizontal adjustment. Also, is one set for the low beam bulb and one set for the high beam bulb? Thanks in advance.

There are only 2 screws on the H1s that actually adjust the headlight aim, they are the 2 that are behind the little rubber plugs on the ring. The one on top adjusts vertical aim on the one on side adjusts horizontal. The high beam and low beam adjust together, but id aim em using the low beam since that is most like what you'll be using more.

Chris,

Thanks for your reply, but I don't have any plugs - I have a "rim" that fits over the headlight, covering these 4 screws. It is held in place with a screw at the very bottom of this ring. With the setuip you describe, where are these plugs located?

John: The H1s that you have are a huge pain, and yes, they have separate adjusters for up/down and left/right for each bulb. The best thing that you can do is point the car at a garage door or similar and play with the screws - I can't remember which is which. I can tell you, that back when you still saw the H1s once in a while, that often the adjuster mechanism for one or more aim settings failed. It was bad enough that I think we were only able to adjust one out of three cars that we tried to set up - we sold a lot of H4s back then! Good luck with it...

Pete,

Thank you for your prompt reply! I'll play around with it.

There is a diagram in the Haynes manual - do you have one?

IIRC, the low beam adjustment changes both bulbs - so you do it first. I might have that backwards, but I don't think they are ind. adjustments.

There are 4 adjusting screws, not 2.

Sorry for the bum advice John D, as Pete pointed out I got H1s confused w/ H4s. Guess I'm too young to remember H1s . . .

Randy,

Thank you for the Haynes suggestion. Borrowed a copy. Am i interpreting this correctly that the "main beam" is the high beam and the "dipped beam" is the low beam?

Chris - no problem - thanks for your interest.

I think that's right - make 2 copies - one for the car & one for a filing cabinet...

be careful not to move the screws too much - if it comes out you'll probably have to remove the headlight from the bucket

John: In case you haven't figured it out yet, on the lens you will find a letter, either "A" or "F", near each of the four screws (1:00, 4:00, 8:00 and 11:00 o'clock). "A" designates a low beam adjusting screw, "F" designates a high beam adjusting screw. As you look at the headlight the 1:00 screw will be for low beam up/down, the 4:00 screw will be for high beam left/right, the 8:00 screw will be for low beam left/right and 11:00 will be for high beam up/down.
