Default Sound preference 3.2 or 3.6?

Having heard a fair sample of Porsches aircooled engines I have to say that I think the 964 Carerra 3.6 has the best engine sound of all production 911s.

Thoughts?

I have an '84 Carerra 3.2 and I have to admit that I'm a little jealous of the sountrack of some 911s. What's a good set of pipes to give the exhaust note "that edge"?

I have a 3.2 and don't think it's the best sounding engine. Too quiet and not much intake or exhaust noise. I do enjoy a 3.0 SC with an aftermarket exhaust.

I love the sound of a 3.0L SC motor about 4k rpm. The 964 3.6L motor has the best sound at idle.

Fabspeed has a nice comparison of the the 3.2 and 3.6 engine sound on their website...I personally thought the 3.6 sounded a little quieter/more muted.

I like mine.

It's hard to believe I have a six in my car. Deep rumble, burble and then the turbos begin to whine. Heaven is the sound behind me.

I have a 964 and a 3.2 Carrera. I still feel the 3.6 motor has a great exhaust note and is probably the best exhaust note of the modern 911's.

My 3.2 has a Dansk sport muffler and that has really made the 3.2 sound more agressive than a stock exhaust setup.

But, an early flat 6 with carbs gets my vote for best overall sound. The 3.6 in a 964 is fairly muted most of the time. The fan blades were redesigned to be quieter, there is more engine compartment insulation, etc., etc. that hides that sound we all love. An early car is very open and not much beats the sound of Weber's sucking air at WOT behind you along with that exhaust note, fan noise and valve train clicking along.

So, early motor sounds are my first choice followed closely by the 3.6 liter motors from the 964 series.

My 3.2 has the absolute perfect exhaust note for my tastes. I've heard plenty of other 911's, and I'd say equal length tubular headers have the nicest (IMO at least) effect on the exhaust note of our cars. It really smooths out the exhaust pulses and gives it more of a smooth whine as opposed to the traditional boxer burbble. I'm currently fixing some issues on my car, but hopefully within a few weeks I can get some vids of it to show what I'm talking about.

As far as the best sounding Porsche F6's? My vote goes to the 2.0L 906 or 2.8 RSR. Few auditory sounds raise the hairs on the back of my neck like hearing either of those 2 shifting gears at 8k rpm.

Not an F6 though still a multiple of 6 so it's relevant, 917 F12's are the best sound on the face of the planet IMO.

My 1984 3.2 has the guts of the cat converter punched out. Sounds great. Low and kind of loud. Sets off someone's car alarm in my office lot every afternoon...
