I'll make a shameless plug for my book here, which has a picture of thermal reactors on page 75, and a photo of a catalytic converter used on later models on page 90.

Shroud colors go like this:

Red: Early 911Ss, carbs or MFI ('67 - 73), 911 SCs
Green: Early 911Es, MFI ('69 - 73), 2.7s
Black: Early 911s, 911Ts, '73.5 CIS Ts
Yellow: '72 and early '73 Ts w/MFI

Any 2.7 has probably been reworked or a different engine installed already. If not or only a top end rebuild I'd pass on it. If no paperwork forgetaboutit.

I'll confirm what Pete said about the '77 stock valve guides lasting at least 100k. I think the better guides were used mid production?

Actually the 74-77 can be a great deal if properly rebuilt w/upgrades as they are so disliked by the market in general.

My car was stock street perfect as my bro bought it when 1yr old and used a wonderful Calif LA wrench to maintain it. No pulled studs, no oil burning, CIS perfect, no heat exchangers, etc. Started right up when desert hot or 20f cold. That package is unusual imo.
