I must admit I run mine on the loose side also, about .5 3/4 " of deflection. If I grab the fan and try to turn it , it is a bit of effort but I can in fact move the fan and have the belt slip. I think it is fine , if it slips ( and I really don't think it does ) it would only be minor on starting, my belt is not glazed at all.

WWell I decided to jump off the bridge today and pull the alternator

No real problems pulling it out except for the lower left side air-deflecter nut, I am sure glad I have skinny hands !!

I also remembered to disconnect the battery.

I just used a rubber makket to tap the alternator out of the round magnesium gizmo and then used two small kiddy chairs to support the edges of the fan (Not the blades) and I used a rubber mallet with wood to slowly tap it out and had the alternator drop onto a large pile of rags.

The alternator is a re-manufactured Bosch unit so hopefully it's better then the original Paris-Rhone unit.

I guess the real fun part is the installation.

I marked certain parts with a blue marker so hopefully everything lines back up.

Iceman,

I created a diagram of where to connect the wires.

What is the best way to re-install the fan on the Alternator shaft?

Should I use some lubricant to help the fan slide down?

Mine just slipped on no problem , and then I slipped in the wudruff key if I remember correctly. A bit of lubricant wouldn't hurt but I didn't need it. Perhaps you could tap it on with a piece of abs piping over the shaft if need be, but if it is all cleaned up and shiney you should be fine.

Doh !!...

Hey you mean I'm not the only one who does these things ?

I remembered to take it out, I just couldn't remember where I put it.

Some of the cars used 3 nuts to hold the air shroud on , others use all 6, mine is an older one that used all 6. One word of caustion when putting it back together. if it is like mine it is an internal regulator, I think the blue wire is a press on blade not a screw on . Be VERY carfull on this one. After putting the wires on you have to kind of rotate the alternator to get all the shroud screws on , it is very easy for this wire to fall off ( ask me how I know ) . Then when you start the car the alternator won't work and you have to take it all off again, scraping off those scabs that were healing on the back of your hands from the first time you did it .. I would suggest recrimping this connector.

good luck.

Iceman,

All of my wires have the circle type connections that are tightened down by a bolt so they cannot come off unless the nut unscrews or the connection breaks..

I did not find any loose crimp connections.

The Alternator is ready

$190, a bit higher then I expected but they also replaced the brushes and voltage regulator.

Now it's time for me to melt some wires

I picked the Alternator up today and the guy who rebuilt it also replaced the Diodes since one was bad.

He mentioned that there is one particular diode that always goes bad and he asked around and still does not know an answer.

It is the third one down on the left if you are looking at the back with the black plastic cover on the top. He thinks it's because of the alternator casting that is really close to the diode and maybe due to heat or moisture it causes the tip to contact the aluminum housing causing it to short out.
