Post charging battery on '87 911

Can anyone tell me if those chargers that plug into the cigarette lighter to keep the battery charged will work on my '87 911?

I was told that the lighter in this MY only works w/ the key in the 'on' position.

TIA,
Dan

The standard setup on pre-90 cars is just how you say: the key must be in the "on" position. The lighter must be powered for the charger to work. If you want to test your specific car, just push in the lighter with the key "off." If the lighter pops out and is warm, then the charger will work without the key. If it just sits there like I suspect, then you would have to do a bit of rewiring to get power to the lighter without the key.

Thanks Reed,
I should have mentioned- the battery is out of the (20 degree) car.

Someone sent me this link which states a "retrofit" is needed in pre-90 911s.
