Default Oil Filters-- OEM or K&N Performance Gold?

Hi, I just received my 1986 911 and am getting a head start on ordering supplies.

Anyone have thoughts on oil filters? Obviously my first inclination is to go with the OEM filter (made by Mann I believe).

Anyone have insight as to the K&N Performance Gold filters?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, input. Also--I am running Castrol GTX 20W-50.

If you weren't going to replace the filter often, go with the K&N, but since you should replace the filter often, I believe it is a waste of money.

Thanks for the advice. I will stick with the OEM (As I most likely would have).
Just was wonderinf if the filtration on the K&N was that much better.

I believe it probably does flow better, but I don't think it makes a difference if you change the filter often enough. I've heard mechanics admit that synthetic is clearly better than regular oil, for example, but they don't recommend running it for 7,500 miles to find out. They would rather we change the "regular" oil every 3,000 miles instead.

The Mahle/Porsche filters have a bypass valve that may not be the same on other filters. I have used factory filters for 39 years and never had a problem. I use the Mahle OC-54 on my 88 Coupe. I believe Pete Z. and Steve Wiener advocate this also.

I usualy use the Mahle OC54 filter on my 3.2. I was at the dealer a couple of months
ago and needed a filter... bought the factory Porsche filter. There is a difference !!
I liked the Mahle, it is actually bigger than the Porsche filter I got at the dealer.
What is up with that ??

So you use the OEM-Quality filter, but not actually the Porsche filter?
I see them both for sale and the Porsche filter is about $16 and the Mahle is abut $8. Is there any difference?

When I say "OEM" I include Mahle in there. Is that incorrect? I thought Porsche allowed Mahle to build parts for their cars such as these...

Since you can spend anywhere from $10 to $10,000 per bottle [of scotch], you might want to clarify what "good" means.

The word Porsche printed on the can has to be worth at least 8.00 :-)

I have used a K&N filter and it does meet the requirments for an anti-drainback valvel...The media in the filter is synthetic and tighter than an OEM filter. I believe it is a good filter but I have since been using Mann, Mahle, or WIX as they are easier to get and very, very high quality filters. WIX is also the exact same as the NAPA Gold filters.
