Porsches are so weird. What other car do you have to remove the oil cap to check the dipstick? It took me weeks to find the dipstick in the first place!

Only wonderful cars equipped with the majic of a dry sump oil system, which allows for the elimination of water pumps, coolant, radiators, and a bunch of related crap that's usually really expensive to replace when it fails!

Hey iceman,

You'll forgive me, but your write up really got me cracking up! It was a comedy of errors, one mounting after the other. Oh so human, and a BTDT moment ...welcome to the human race! Glad all worked out well in the end!

Default that'll buff right out !

Just wanted to show you guys a pic of the evidence ... I wasn't going to let an oil cap keep me from my car ... a little persuasion and away I go !!!!

that would be an easy thing to do as often as we check oil...with everything running...then rechecking after a top off. Oil level good, turn car off, close lid...I've done it too but have caught myself.
My cap holder was the top of the AC pump, now that that is gone it'll be the bumper where I can't miss it.

Wow! Thanks for sharing Clive. It a good warning for the rest of us.
Your heart must have been in your throat for a moment for sure.
First day with my car, driving home from picking it up from the transport company in Hamilton, I filled it up along the way and left the cap sitting on the gas pump. Doh!!
Glad to hear you didn't get drenched.

cheers

SAAB 900 S had a dipstick attached to the oil cap. Of course SAABs are known as wierd cars too.

Iceman, you have convinced me to check my oil cap before I leave for Muskoka tomorrow!

Of course the hidden message here is everyone should be comfortable enough with changing their fan belt in the dark before ever heading out. Should be some kind of ownership test
