Default question on steering rack, column, and bearing

Can I check the bearings (where the steering column comes in place with the steering rack) with them still on the car? Is it possible?

I'm not sure which bearings you are talking about or what year 911 you have. On my 82 SC I have a bad bearing where the steering shaft comes out of the steering column. I suspected a bad bearing because of steering wheel slop. You can get to this bearing by removing the steering wheel (a simple job). There may be another bearing inside the steering column but other than that there are no bearings where the shaft meets the rack. There are a couple of universal joints between the steering column and the rack that may be worn. These can be checked but only after removing the fresh air plenum. Again I am talking about the SC models.

My question is: has anyone changed the steering shaft bearing that is just under the steering wheel?
I am wondering how to pull the old one out without removing the steering shaft that the wheel attaches to. I have a new bearing but don't know how to remove the old one.

Yeah Jerry could you make it a little bigger ? :-)

Chris I had your slop problem too and got a 10.00 sleeve that drops in with the steering wheel off. There is originally a plastic one in there that gets pulverized. I dropped the metal sleeve in and put the wheel back on , perfecto , took about 15minutes. The usual symptom is upa nd down slop in the wheel.

Brinkley,
so what are the step when you take it off?
By Looking at it, I am thinking first, separate the column and the rack. Take the tie rod ends off the wheels. Unbolt some bolts on the rack then pull the rack to the side, and out of the car?
Can it be that simple?

it is as simple as it looks. ask if you have any problems. It took some monkeying around getting it out with tie rods attached. Careful with the aluminum housing.

Ice,

Exactly, I pulled bits of the plastic out of the bearing. It was indeed pulverized. Where did you get this 10.00 sleeve that fit in there? That would be much better than pulling the whole thing apart.

Chris
Pelican sells the part. It's $12.25. Part number: 928-347-739-02-M100

Here's a article on installing the bushing. It's a very simple job.
