Default Sales tax question

Anyone know the sales tax I should plan on paying to buy from a private seller in New York. I am a New Jersey resident. What if I have the car shipped from NY to NJ?

bt,

The sales tax rate is (typically) determined from the 'ship to' location. You'll most likely be paying NJ sales tax on the car and not New York sales tax.

Lots of info here: NJ Dept of Trans

You'll pY sales tax in the state where YOU title the car. In NJ it used to be 6% it may be more now.

I like NC sales tax on used auto's from a private seller.

Zero

I just had to pay property tax based upon the book value. 82 Targa was valued at $6,000 so I just had to pay about $50.

I would have had to pay %3 tax if it was from a dealer.

Sales tax is based on where car is registered. That said, if you pay sales tax in another state, you usually can deduct that amount in your home state.

...yep, good old CA. Doesn't matter if the car is new, or used ten times over, when it changes hands (private party or dealer) you gotta pony up the sales tax as though it were coming off the showroom floor for the first time. No, we don't have "property tax" for cars, but let's say that the above mentioned '82 SC changed hands for $12K here in Kern County. The tax would have been 7.25% of $12K = $870. Yes, it's a one-time fee, where property tax, I assume, is annual, but it's big enough to hurt!
