Installing bulkhead sound pad?
It it possible to install a bulkhead sound pad without removing the engine? An obiviuos pain in the **** job but has anyone done it w/engine in place? If so, any tips. Planning to use 3M Super Trim Adhesive.
Thanks Ted

Hi Ted:
This is a toughie with the engine in the car. Not impossible but definately a challenge.
When I have to do these, I unhook all of the electrical and fuel connections to the engine so I can lower it down 3-4" for access in the front. Its also helpful to have an extra set of hands so you can do a neat job of installing the new sound pad.

Ted,
There is an article on tech.rennlist.com on how to do a partial engine drop (what Steve described), under 911 engines. Very useful to gain access to the back of the engine compartment without actually droping the entire engine. You'll probably want to remove the engine-mounted fan to assist with rear access.

When I bought my 82 the sound pad was missing, and I put one in when I had the engine out for a clutch job. Net difference in sound = zero.
Near as I can tell, all this did was make my car heavier and my wallet lighter.

Steve,
Do you need to do that same thing if you want to test the oil pressure in 993? (Sender is there back & otherwise it seems to me quite unaccessible.
Or is there a way to test the oil pressure some other way?

As far as difference in sound goes, you won't notice if you have a sporty exhaust on the car. I did notice a difference (small, mostly limited to the ticking and whirring kinds of noises) in my '83 SC with standard exhaust.

FF:
You need access to the main oil galley and the 3.6's are accessable only in the rear at the sending unit.

Thanks everybody. Got a great deal for a new sound pad on Ebay...THEN re-looked at engine compartment. If zero noise reduction, especilaly in a Targa, then may forget it. Sport exhaust and headers loom in the future. Anybody need a new sound pad cheap?

I'm gonna stick with it then. My oil pressure gauge shows about 4.5 (hot, cold above 2500 rpm) but some times goes up to 5 & little above.
Idle pressure (warm) is 2 or little over so I was thinking there must be something wrong with the gauge or sender.
Originally thought that it would be simple to just change the sender but then I learned where it is...

Mine was disintagrating - bit's of foam falling and crap raining down all over the engine!
I ripped it out - making more of mess of things doing that - vacumed out all the junk. I think I could tell a slight difference in nsoise ....maybe? but now that I'm used to it I wouldnt bother reinstalling a new one.
Besides, I have the radoi off so that I can hear the reall music
