Exclamation Help - Sudden Full Throttle

I was slowing down from 55 to 45, foot off gas pedal, out of gear, when the throttle suddenly went ballistic, tach needle halfway through the red to about 6600 rpm.
I shut the engine off and pulled over. After restart, it has been functioning normally. I had been using cruise control, and didn't shut it off with the control lever, but it had apparently shut off after tapping the brakes.
1) Is this a cruise control relay issue, or has anyone else experienced this and have any suggestions?
2) Is this a normal setting for the rev limiter, 6600 rpm?

I was hard on the accelerator in traffic in 2nd gear and almost lost it. I too was lucky to shut down and coast to the side of the road. I had an idea what it might be when I tapped the accelerator and all went back to normal. I found the black cruise control cable had separated from the inside of the black threaded housing that screws into the bracket. The cable was backing out of the housing upon acceleration and catching on the side of the housing and not going all the way back in. I fixed it by using a small piece of wire (.015-.025) and wrapped it around the cable and twisted it so it wouldn't slip. Then I wrapped the other end around the housing....this kept the cable from pulling out of the housing.

All I see is a black cable that attaches to the throttle linkage, and goes into the vacuum unit (I assume) near my deck lid shock. Other than that, there's not much I can see or get at. The vacuum hoses seem to be attached. Do you have a photo or can you describe specifically where the black threaded housing that screws into the bracket is?

I had the same thing happen to my 97' 911. Had it for like 1 week and was cruisng on the ramp and it broke at the accelerator linkage. Ended up buying a new cable and then installing it. Not cheap though - new cables are abut $180 if I remember correctly.

You are at the right place, I cut my wire to stop this from happening. I never would use a cruise control anyway.Just cut the wire at the throttle body if you so desire and it won't hurt anything except the cruise control. The wire is on the left side and turns back toward hood shock. I don't have pictures but someone here will.

Default To add a photo

Leave the cursor flashing where you want the top of the photo to be (not sure that’s necessary, but can’t hurt) and then scroll down past your message to “Aditional Options”, and click on “Manage Attachments”. A window should open up: Click on Browse, then when you find your photo and click on it, click “Upload”. That will do it, unless your photo is way too large, in which case it will tell you and you will need to reduce its size and resave the new smaller version. Then repeat. If you want to know how large your photo is, right-click on it and select “Properties”. Hope this helps.

Jerry,
Thanks, that's quite a nice engine compartment. What's that item on top of where the heater blower motor used to go?

Hrer's a pic of my CC cable and where my problem with the cable sheath separating from the plastic housing. It caused the accelerator to stick full open in traffic. It was scary as hell.

you may find you need irfanview or some other editor to reduce the size of the picture. always use this program and resample/resize ( irfanview is shareware )
