Aside from the extra gear in the box and the superior rear suspension, you really have to drive an S versus a 2.x car -- they're very different and I would encourage anyone to find the extra dollars to afford an S. In terms of new cars, the price differential might be enough for someone to go with the Cayman instead of the Cayman S for example (given the Boxster is really a Cayman Cabriolet, right? : ) but in older cars, the delta between a stock Box and an S reflects more than residual sticker.

Of course, if you carry this debate onto the Boxster list, be prepared. : )
i ve been reading ppbb for a while now, and the used boxster buying guide is great.

i noticed that even boxsters sales are much bigger than 996/997, but the Boxster forum has little traffic. that says something about the owners.

pl,
90k miles is 90k miles. But I also know the owner very well and can attest to the car's condition. The car has not given him an ounce of trouble.

okay we are getting carried away here..... oh what the hell...

If a boxster is a chicks car what does that make the guy in a 996 from the front .??????????

reminds me of a post a made a couple of months back and I surprisingly didn't get flamed .. someone was looking for a car to complement his boxster and someone else recomended a 996 .... My response was why a 996... he ALREADY HAS a boxster.......BURN......

Excellent point.

I think I have an eye for picking one year from the next in Porsches, Ferraris and Jags, but for life of me I can't call a Boxster from a Carrera until I can get a glimpse of the flank, there's just no use trying as they shoot by in the opposite direction -- I just flash a polite "nod" with the high beams and it's all the same to me.

The newer Boxster front is growing on me, but I'm still not there -- from the rear, the Boxster, especially the "show" car before the production car, is arguably one of the best looking rear views of a any car in modern times -- Porsche, Ferrari, any of the manufacturers. I'd still take a 993 wide body over the Boxster, but that's just us 993 "dyed in the wool" Type 993 types.

The Boxster "is it coming or going" symmetry of the front and rear disappoints me a little. And the enormous hump of the Cab doesn't appeal. I enjoyed driving the 996 3.4 Cab but didn't like the look of it from any angle. Conversely the 2.5 Boxster was a hoot to drive and all I ever wanted was more oomph and a gear for all occasions ... Mr Porsche answered those requests with the S ... so maybe I just need to go get an '01 S and enjoy it ... but then again the '03 has a glass rear window (hated paying those dollars for a plastic rear window when even the Miata went to glass ... oh dear ... the Mobius Loop of Porsche buying !!! ... Infinite Porsche Purchase Procrastination ... Aaargh !!!

thanks for your pointer.
I've seen 993's with 110K miles looking showroom fresh in the paint and very tidy in the cabin. I've also seen 50K mile 993's looking like they were New York taxis.

The 986/996 cabin wasn't all that nice to begin with and seems to age quickly do to the various materials decisions Porsche imposed. With care, I could imagine the car is still cosmetically good. And the kinds of things I see in "long tooth" Boxsters don't usually relate to underlying mechanical problems, just wear and tear. So if the owner has maintained the transmission, engine, suspension, brakes and generally cared for the cosmetics, I don't see a problem as such and the price should reflect the miles ... this is how I'd get myself into an S ... yeah, there I go on the whole S thing again ... : )

Men call them 986 because they know Boxsters are chick cars. Next time you see a Boxster on the road start making metal notes of who's driving them. Chicks! 85% Dont get me wrong - I like them but again - it is what it is and its been that way since day one.
