Post Anodizing Question?

I am doing a full restoration on my 78 SC. I am going to send off my door handles to be reanodized. I am wondering if there are any other parts that were originally anodized that I should be sending at the same time. Does anybody know if the black trim that goes around the windows is supposed to be anodized or was it painted originally. Mine is currently painted so I can't tell if it was originally anodized.

On a 78 SC, I am not so certain that the trim was blacked out. This didn't happen across the board until the 1980 models hit the street.

My neighbor down the street has a 78 SC. It has chrome door handles as well as chrome trim. I do believe this is correct. With so many 80 through 89 911 cars with blacked out trim, I prefer the chrome trim look as it is different.

There is a restoration book by a Dr. Johnson. He is in the process of working his way through the models: 356 A B C, early 911 through 1973. He probably skipped the 74 through 77. I think he did do a book on the 78 to 83 SC. This is where you want to go for authenticity...if that is what you want.

The black trim was optional in the 70s. I think that it may have been standard on the Turbo. Around 1980, black trim became standard. The early black trim was anodized on the window trim, however, a different process was used on the door handles and some of the trim on the Targa. I've heard it called "black chrome," but I have no idea what the process involves. Porsche went to black polyester powdercoat on the trim around 1980, except that the door handles remained "black chrome" throughout production. Your '78 may have had silver trim that was painted - this was a common, unfortunate "upgrade" in the 80s. Or it may have had original anodized black trim that someone tried to repaint. I have not seen any reanodizing of the black trim that looks right - it always comes out purple looking in full sun. If anyone knows a source, I would like to hear about it.

I have a '79 with original black trim - it has faded to a medium gray around front and back windows, which doesn't look too bad. The side window trim stayed pretty dark, but, the prior owner had the door window frames professionally painted with satin black trim paint, and this looks really good, even though I now have at least three colors of "black" trim on my car.
To give you an idea of how carefully the repaint on my car was done, the shop removed and disassembled the frames completely, and painted just the "hoop", leaving the vertical divider for the vent window in the original trim.

I think that the pros will tell you to go with a careful repaint of the trim for the cars with original black anodized trim, like yours. I think that the pros also suggest leaving the fixed glass trim in place for the repaint. See the "Upfixin" series from PCA from the 80s for further info.

The black chrome is a chroming process where the layer that should be chrome is replaced by silver oxide. This process leads to a finish that will not turn purplish/lighter with time. Any good chrome shop knows the process. I had no trouble to have mine redone.

GeorgeK, thanks for the info. Is all the trim (i.e., not just the door handles) black chrome, or is some anodized? It sounds like the bad refinishing jobs that I've seen have been anodizing, which does not give the same effect as the black chrome.

Tom,
AFAIK only the door handles were black chrome. The window trim is definitely anodised, all around teh car.

The place I found for anodizing was http://www.anobrite.com . The problem is the quote they gave me was $400-$500. I wrote them back and told them I could buy the parts new for that amount. So needless to say I don't have an anodizing solution yet. By the sounds of it I may just want to have all the trim painted satin and find a place to black chrome the handles. I have read a bit on anodizing at home but not to sure I want to go there. The site I found on this is: http://www.focuser.com/atm/anodize/anodize.html

Does anyone have any experience with anodized "look" spray paint? I just saw an ad for Rustoleum touting (high temperature, I think) anodized look paint. I'm instantly skeptical but sometimes these simple solutions look pretty good. Thoughts?

Springer,
You must have called the GOLD platers instead of the anodising shop. I had all the window trim redone for less than 100$. I'm sure shopping around will yield better prices.

George,

Who did you have do the anodizing? I admit that was the only quote I got. I just figured it was probably representative of other shops. I'd love to send the work to the same place you had yours done, let me know.
