That is a rip off! I just had a PPI done yesterday in the DC area at a Porsche dealership and I was charged $219 (2 hours labor). $219 is high also, but the car I'm looking at is expensive and thought I'd spend the money for an independent eval. I think they would do it in 2 hours or less.

jrod: $330 is more than fair, especially if we're talking about an SC - which would include valve cover removal to inspect the cylinder head studs, as well as a leakdown test (absolutely mandatory). The price is a little high if we're talking about a 2.2 T without A/C. Most professional shops have climbed to near the $100/hr level, I assume that your dealer is at $110, and is charging you three hours. If you're looking at a 3.2 car the inspection, including leakdown test, should take about 2.5 hours. Remember, PPIs are a real challenge for most shops, because a point by point explanation of everything recorded on your invoice will have to be done. That takes time, and the service manager/mechanic won't want to give you the appearance that they're rushing you. Just handing you an invoice with a list of 22 items that need correction, plus an estimated charge for each, just isn't enough. You, the buyer, must understand that information in order to successfully negotiate a price with the seller. Look at it this way, if that $330 inspection gives you $3K of ammo, and you get the car for $1500 less than the asking price, that $330 was well spent. Please be sure to read my PPI thread near the top of this page so you fully understand how much is involved with a PPI.

I was quoted $330 by a reputable shop in Ohio a couple of weeks ago. This was for a complete PPI with leakdown.

The owner asked that all the paperwork and maintenance records accompany the car so that he could make sure that all the work done to the car in the past was done properly, check for any issues related to the car being tracked and check for any evidence that the car had water damage (Louisana turned up on the CarFax).

$330 sounded fair to me.

I've always paid between 250 and 350, with a compression or leakdown test. Some shops recommend one over the other.

I spoke with the seller and he said that he's 45mins from naples. He said that the car has a oil leak and the exaust is backfireing. he wouldn't like to run the car for that far. he said only if i towed it. He is selling the car for $5k negotiable. but he did say....for that type of car onces it work it will be worth alot more than 5k. the engine is a 2.7. what do you guys think...is it worth it me buying for 5k or a little less and making it my project car and fix it.. or just wait and get a another one.

a 2.7 is a questionable motor even when running well ( sorry if I just flamed somebody ). There is no way I would touch one with known problems unless you know exactly what is causing it .

Pete could a broken head stud cause these symtoms ?

Jrod I would look for a 3.0 liter or a 2.7 you know for a fact has had some serious engine work done to it to resolve the known problems.

No, you won't see a broken head stud on a 2.7, but there is such a wide variety of oil leaks the buyer could really score, or come up with the short end of the stick. The oil leak could be as simple as a thermostat o-ring which is dripping on a hot part of the exhaust, or it could be pulled head studs which are a major problem. The exhaust backfire could be a broken exhaust flange stud, an electrical missfire in the engine, or any number of more serious problems. It is certainly not worth paying for a large tow bill, if the seller wants to move the car let him pay the tow charge. jrod, what year is this thing? If it's a '74/75 Carrera it could be worth more than what is required to buy and fix the car, but that's only going to be the case if the car is in primo condition, and you get lucky on the repairs. If the engine needs to be overhauled and the oil cooler is leaking forget about it - you're going to be upside down for a long time!

Thanks alot guys, i really appreciate your help. I spoke with a porsche guys here in orlando that owns a shop (troy toys) and he is selling a 1979 911SC for about $7k, I will go see it tomorrow and decide. I have read that the 3.9 engine is better than a 2.7 engine.
