Post 911 Power Upgrade

I want to buy an "older" 911. I first was looking at 964's but my mechanic told me the best "older" models to get were the 1985-1989 911.

Would you agree that this is the best model?
I also would like to make upgrades to the car, power upgrades and suspension upgrades.
Any advice on what mods make sense and make good power?

Any advice would help.

Thank you

88 is the best, IMO they are easy to work on. Reliable, parts are interchangable for approx 15 years. I have an 2000 c4 that no way near the fun to drive as my 88. The older cars are the real porsche/go kart feeling rides.

Power is very expensive on Porsche's. Stock hp is approx. 220. The most hp for the money was a "test pipe" that eliminates the cat converter. This cost was around $250.00. I did not dyno the changes however I got the most seat feel change form this. The other change is a new chip. All this does IMO is increase the max RPM another 500-750 before the rev limitor kicks in. The other is a new muffler that lets the air go throught the motor easier. This can be a little expensive for the gain. For approx. $1200 you will gain 25hp. Adding hp form here gets very expensive. Motor approx. 10-20k new transmission with better gearing 10k. If you want 300+hp I would suggest going with a different car that has a v8/cheap power.
Well I do not want to bore you, so that is enough. Tony

The 964 is without a doubt the best bang-for-the-buck buy in the 911 family, right now. Loads of power (and torque), improved suspension, great brakes, ABS, G50 tranny, etc.

Why? Because the 964 is kind of a 'middle child' between the classic 74-89 models and the (gorgeous) 993. They feature styling that fewer people love, and there are a few issues with the earliest 964 models that scare people off.

Strip one down a little, beef up the suspension, and you can put together a heck of a performance car.

Nothing wrong with the 74-89 cars, of course. They're great-looking cars. They're easy to work on, etc. They're what everybody thinks of when they think of a 911.

But there are more nimble (pre-74) 911's, and also more-powerful (post-89) ones. A lightened 964 can pack a lot of punch.
