Smile how to lock the fan to remove the bolt...

all help would be appreciated. i have to remove the fan to spray it, and clean it, and replace the fan belt. how, and with what tool, do i hold the fan in place, while turning the nut off? i have 2 small holes to attach something to the fan assembly, but that's it. on that note, is the fan belt adjustable at all? mine's very loose. thanks...

There is a special wrench that holds the fan while you remove the bolt. The wrench is shaped like a handle with a half circle on the end. The inside of the half circle has 2 protusions that fit into the holes on the outside of the fan pulley. The belt is adjustable by moving the shims from the inside of the pulley to the outside. More shims inside the pulley half means less tension and vice versa.

They sell a tool with a handle that has a half circle with 2 pins in the half circle. It lines up with the holes in the pulley.I believe the nut is
21 or 22mm.Hold the pulley tool with one hand and turn the wrench on the pulley nut with the other, should come right off.I use a box wrench with
a slight offset with a fairly long handle for better touque. If you have the tool kit for the car the tool should be in there. One word of warning there are shims in front and behind the pulley for adjusting it,be careful you don't drop/loose them when you pull the pulley off.

In the early cars (1965 to 1974), it is a handle with two pins that lineup with some holes in the face of the flywheel. I got mine from Paul Wilding via e-bay. The Pelican Parts version looks like this:

On later models (1975 and on), it is the half moon handle with the protursions. The Pelican Parts version looks like this:

Also, check your nut size. My 1973 uses a 24 mm wrench.

Hope this helps. <img border="0" alt="[byebye]" title="" src="graemlins/wave.gif" />

Here's a link to a Tech Article at Pelican Parts on changing the Fan Belt.

The tool should be with the toolkit that came with the car. There should be 6 shims, and depending whether they are on the inboard or outboard side of the outer pulley half will determine how tight the belt gets.

My car came with a pretty complete tool kit but did not have the fan pulley tool so I needed to buy one.
