How much HP in my 1987 Carrera?
#3
Jim: There is certainly some confusion regarding the USA 3.2 liter cars, especially with the '84/85 models. Some literature quote them as having 150 kw, some as having 152 kw. According to most published Porsche Factory literature that I've read:
1984/85 models = 150 kw
1986 models = 152 kw
1987 - 89 models = 160 kw
To calculate DIN horsepower divide kw by .736. Therefore:
1984/85 models = 204 DIN
1986 models = 207 DIN
1987 - 89 models = 217 DIN
To go a step further to SAE (USA standard) hp, divide DIN by 1.014. Therefore:
1984/85 models = 201 SAE (owner's manual says 200)
1986 models = 204 SAE
1987-89 models = 214 SAE

Oh, heck yeah! I read somewhere a number of years ago that someone did some comprehensive dyno testing (Jerry Woods ?), and came up with some interesting numbers - USA cars putting out hp close to that of their Euro brethren, etc. Based on my butt dyno I've always said that '84/85 pre-chipped cars fall into three categories: Out of every 100 cars; 95 are typical, 3 are dogs, and 2 are rocket-ships. I think that we know where your car fits!

I do have the stock chip somewhere, from memory. I bought the car with a Weltmeister chip already in it. I've been meaning to pick up a Steve Wong chip since buying basically, but it's always a case of something else being more important. I haven't dyno'd since putting on the M&K either.

FWIW, here's the actual Porsche data concerning the 1984 model year. These scans are from two factory Porsche owners manual for model year 1984. One is for a USA car, and one is for a German car.

The one thing that the peak number comparisions don't show is the huge differences in the "area-under-the-curve".
Here... the Euro cars have a BIG advantage over the detuned USA cars.
Note the dyno graph comparisions.

Hey Guys,
The HP figures you guys are looking at are crankshaft HP, NOT "TO THE REAR WHEELS". You lose I think 15% or more going through the tranny, etc.
Just MTCW.
