Post strut rebushing questions (long)

All,
Looks like the 86 930 is making a lot of noise in the front end which I've narrowed down to the struts. With the front end up in the air and the tire removed, grabbing the strut housing right in the middle (just below the overriding dust cover)and pulling back in forth reveals a lot of play.
So the questions begin,is this normal wear? I've called Bilstein and they do re-bush the inside of the strut, $50 bucks a side ( no doubt worn in mine and causing all the play). Anyone ever done this before? Seems like this would save a lot of money compared to almost $400 bucks a piece for new ones. The car otherwise rides well so the strut inserts are probably OK, so a re-bush would leave me money for other projects. BTW the car has 64,000 miles and they are the Green Bilstein struts. THanks....
