I wanted a coupe, as I prefer the lines. My wife wanted a targa. I lost. I couldn't afford one of each. Get what YOU want!

I had originally wanted the Targa and drove many while looking for my first Porsche. Then I drove a few Coupes..............

The Coupe won!

I would buy a Targa for a second Porsche car but not as a primary.

The Cab, I would never buy.

I've had both, and although the lines are a bit compromised from the timeless, beautiful shape of the coupe, its a fine trade off for the open air exhilaration. (Cabs are too far the other way though....bad lines and much windier inside than a Targa.) I find it difficult to classify the new "big glass sunroof" 911 as a Targa, because you don't get the open car feel due to the front to rear roof rails over the doors, although its a lot easier to open and close than the classic.

Just my $.02.

Sir,

Lets face it each car is different even within the same type. Lets take the remarks one at a time.

As to squeaks all (older)cars do. It is just a matter of magnitude. Yes open air cars tend to squeak more because of the top to body movement. However unless you drive in movie theaters I have found most body noises to be tolerable. Except of course, for that one guy at work who won't lay off the beans. But that is another story. I pay attention the sound of the engine not the body. Any one who says their (older) car does not make noise needs to turn down the stereo, is being less than honest or has the rarest vehicle on earth.

Value? More Coupes were produced than Targas and more Targas than Cabriolets. Guess who is worth more and who is worth less. That old supply and demand thing. The August 2002 issue of Excellence confirms this fact.

Performance? The stock handling limits of these cars (Porsches) and any other true high performance auto is beyond the capability of all but the professional driver. You will do fine here whatever choice you decide.

In the end it is your money and tastes. I have found that I like the open air of the Targa and the security of a built-in roll bar. Yes Targas do leak. If I could afford a Cabriolet I would probably own one. No sunroof can beat the big sky feel of a removable top or convertible. I did not purchase a Coupe because I could not find a Turbo that would still allow me to send the kids to college. -smile-

In the end it is your money. Buy what you like not what others like for you unless they are paying.

Take care.

P.S. Remember you always see the prettiest girls in the open air cars!

The older 911s are mostly occasional use cars, these days. I feel that it becomes hard to justify such a car, unless the top comes off. A targa does this pretty well, while still offering most of the comfort and quiet of the coupe. However, you will get an occasional rattle or water leak in a targa. Fixing them is part of the ownership experience, I guess. I have one of each, coupe and targa, and I still can't make up my mind which one I like better.

I guess I am a lucky man. My Targa didn't leak. My Cabriolet doesn't leak and is quieter than my Targa was. As fas a flex goes - go drive an Alfa Romeo Spider - The Porsche Cab may as well be coupe compared to that car!

I have a 1982 911SC Targa. I don't have any problems with water. My vote is for Targa. To me there is nothing more enjoyable then taking a long ride in a Porsche, on a warm summer night with the top off, enjoying your favorite CD.

I'm getting in late on this one but can't let it go by without adding my $.02. If you want an open air car nothing beats a Targa. Mine doesn't leak or squeak and any flex is so minimal as not to be noticed. OK the coupes have sexier lines, but I sure get an awful lot of envious looks from the guys driving coupes when I drive by "topless" on a gorgeous day

Good luck making your choice!
