Default Horn problem with 1995 993

My brother has a 1995 993 Cabriolet where a few days ago the horn started to honk whenever braking or driving over a bump.
After some research with a couple of dealers, he was told that there is a horn sensor in the steering wheel that seems to wear out as time goes by. Well, there is a 'New & Improved' replacement part, but with a little string attached: You need to change the steering wheel and airbag in order to use this part. Total cost: around $2.000.....
Has anyone had the same problem? Any good suggestions?

Aftermarket steering wheel are one option but the interior color is classic gray and most steering wheels are black.

Would a 996 steering wheel work? Is it crazy to buy a 'used steering wheel with airbag'?

Just trying to look at all alternatives.... will appreciate any suggestions.

996 3 Spoke and 4 Spoke wheels will work--I would definitely search for one of those [the 3 Spoker is much nicer IMO than the 4 spoke]. You can also get an AJUSA wheel for about $1K I believe as a worst-case. Post this over in the 993 Forum and you may get some different opinions on the cause of the problem--make sure you know the cause before you spend money chasing a problem that you won't correct!

My 95 993 just did the same thing a couple of weeks ago.
I have changed 8-9 at my shop in the past year or so.
All you need is a new airbag retainer. I am at home now but I think they are only 50-60 bucks plus shipping. Really easy to install too. give me a call tomorrow @ 850 769 9500 if you want one or have any questiions it or the install.

there was a group 6 bulletin, that shows up in my PET. part number 993.347.088.00 for a 95 superceeds to a 993.347.088.01, It doesn't say what else is needed, but its a common piece on the four spoke wheel to go bad. Easy to replace, just don't F*ck up the bolts holding the airbag in. Faced with a "supposed" $2K repair, I would get a second opinion from another shop
