Default Rear shock pin. What tool to use?

There is a small pin, flat on 2 sides, that sticks out of my rear shocks. It spins when I try to remove the shock bolt. Is there a special tool I should use to hold it? I am afraid of stripping it with pliers.

Ok, I am not making any progress. "101 Projects..." states to keep the washer from turning while you loosen the bolt. I've been doing that for an hour now. It doesn't mention any pin. Something teels me the pin is turning inside my socket.

Any advice?

Sorry to tell you Ulrich , you need a highly specialized Porsche Tool for this..or vice grips !!!

Use a ratcheted closed wrench from sears for these, those things are great .. or any regular wrench but it will take longer. YOU CAN NOT USE A SOCKET.

This is because you have to grab the flats above it with either a very small wrench or a set of vice grips. While holding the vice grips on the flats, losen the nut. It will become apparent very quickly why a ratchet wrench works so great here.

Good luck

ulrich: I'm having a terrible time posting (my computer?) but that "pin" is the center shaft of your shock. I use a dog bone (box end wratchet wrench) for the big nut, and either a 6mm open end or small adjustable wrench to hold the flat sides of the shaft. I tried to post this a while ago, I hope it's accepted...

Ulrich,
You must keep the shaft from turning not the washer. The pin or shaft is the what the nut is threaded on - in the pic it has red paint on it. theiceman's advice is dead on - use a wrench vise grip or even pliers - anything to hold it to get the nut off. once you break the nut loose it pretty easy.

Try the left side first - it just easier to see and get at. FYI- the right side may require you to remove or move some stuff - oil breather lines and air box cover if my memory is correct.

Good luck

As I said, get a blind guy to help you .. he will have it off in minutes as he is used to not seeing what he is working on :-)

uhlrich, I suggest you use an 8 inch Crescent wrench to grab the flat lands on the shock shaft. And per pevious recommendation, use a box end or ratcheted wrench to turn the nut. You may some difficulty due there being what looks like blue loctite on the threads. Good luck.

uhlrich, another option is to get a 90 degree angled air rachet with a deep socket (3/8" is what I use) and hit it quickly to break the loctite. If it comes off your good to go. If not, use previous suggestion(s). I just did this job last week and that's how I did it.
