Default battery hold down

I have a smaller than normal battery in my 75 911. It is not a tiny one, just not a perfect fit for the normal hold down clamp. I have been running various ideas through my mind for a good holder.

A simple nylon strap seems to be a good bet, but I was wondering if something like that has any known dawbacks. I would add a u-bolt at the rear lip and one that bolts in place of the front clamp.

Actually...
If you clean up the area underneath your existing battery really well, you will likely find the same thign that I did...
a second threaded hole in the deck to secure the smaller battery with the factory clamp.
I used it for the modified/custom bracket that holds my Optima battery in place.

Hi Dan

I found that too . but the PO had the wrong type of battery that had the tab for holding down along the long length of the battery , not the short one.. oh well, new batteries are great anyway :-)

Yeah... preventative maintenance. If it is the same as my SC, Interstate has the proper battery with the cleats on the short sides. Get the smaller one... the big battery is a HUGE PIA to install...

My PO (bless her heart) wedged a massive Sears Diehard International battery in there. It doesn't move. It can't. Forget the hold downs, this thing covers them all. There is only one angle to even get it in without removing things. One of these days I'll get around to replacing it.

May I suggest a sack of wheat on the other side to even things out a bit?

I ended up using the nylon strap method. I got a few U-bolts from Lowes, drilled holes into the channel at the rear and into the metal tab that bolts to the front and then bolted it in. It works well enough, but I don't know if it would pass tech at a driving event.

If there was an alternative bolt hole for a shorter battery, it was rusted away. I replaced the 'floor' of the battery tray last year, apparently acid had leaked since it is the only rust on the car. Also, my particular battery does not have the cleat that would engage the channel. Thanks for all the help!
