Default Switching to Euro rear bumper guards.

Thinking about switching the massive black bumper guards on the rear of my 78 to the narrower Euro version. Will it expose mounting holes of any kind?

I saw a 84 with small euro bumper gaurds and it had black rubber plugs over one exposed mounting hole to the inside. The owner said it was a euro car and that was how it came, I was thinking at some time it must have had a US bumper put on it. I guess my answer would be yes I think it would expose a mounting hole.

Yes, it will expose one hole on each side, i.e., the third mounting hole.

I also like cheap ways to remove weight, esp in the rear, & improve styling.
some appraoches;
a) rubber plugs (can be painted)
b) carriage bolts (shallow, rounded tops) painted bumper color
c) filled and painted
d) leave the holes open

I tried a then b. Also had to touch up some marks left by material from the guards & figure out how to install a license plate light. I think I knocked 25 lbs off the tail. Also removed the rear seatbacks & belts - another 15 or 20 lbs as I recall. good luck!

Chris57: FYI, I believe that the '84 car that you saw was, in fact, a gray market car still fitted with Euro bumper guards. The approx. one inch diameter plug that you saw, a couple inches inboard of the left bumper guard, was for the tow hook hole.

Peter, you are right again (big surprise). I ran into this car again after posting my response and it does have the plug on the left side only. I am always so impressed with the knowledge long time porsche owners and technicians have about these cars, it proves that these awesome cars evoke emotion in those who own them and work on them. I wish the currrent crop of european automobile technicians I work with today had the same passion as the porsche people I have met.

I also swapped out my large rubber guards for the smaller Euro ones....looks much better now. I was fortunate to find a complete '74 bumper at a swap meet....just had it painted to match the car and I was in business. If you wind up having to install the smaller guards on a US bumper, have the extra holes filled and painted....looks MUCH better than plastic plugs from the hardware store.
