Post 915 first/second gear syncho problem: what is it?

I keep hearing that this is an issue with the pre 87 911s.

Can someone explain what it is...what the symptoms are when evaluating a car...and the costs of repairs?

Thanks again.

The 915, if it was abused (or just has too much wear) will grind when you try to shift from 1st to 2nd, or down to 1st. If the 1st gear synchro is bad, you won't be able to put it in 1st without grinding it, unless you are at almost a complete stop.

These cars have the 915 transmission with a cable actuated clutch vs. the G50 and its hydraulic chutch on the 87 - later cars. The 1st/2nd gears are the first to start to likely show wear, resulting in balky shifting difficulty, notchiness [over the usual notchness], grinding into 1st at anything from near standstill, etc. Often people find that it is vastly helped by bushing replacement [on the shifer, the shift rod, and the shift coupler] if they are worn -- or, given the age of these cars, rebuild.

I'm no expert, but mine exhibits some of these traits, so I've been looking at it.
